I'm looking for a light and a hood for a 10g tank, and I'm having trouble finding just what I'm looking for.

Aqueon makes a 20" hood with a built in fluorescent bulb. I can't find the wattage listed but I'm assuming it's 15W or so. It retails for 30-35$, so that's my baseline.

Ideally I'd like something with a bit more wattage than that without paying a ton more money. Anyone know of anything? I can certainly purchase a glass hood and light separately if it makes sense to do so.

I got a clamp on light from Home Depot for $5 and have a plant bulb in it over open top tank. You could also buy a glass top and use a desk light. I went for cheap because I can't see putting much money into a 10 gallon tank.

I use the screw in incandescent hood and use CF bulbs. Does a nice job.

Good ol walmart has a hood for a 10 gal tank that you can put two screw-in type bulbs in. They also sell 10 watt 6700K bulbs right in the aquarium section there too. Gives you 2 watts per gallon which works nicely for a lot of low light plants. Total cost for hood and lights is about $23 before tax I think. The only complaint I have is that the opening on it is pretty tiny, so if you're doing anything bedsides feeding, you have to lift up the whole lid. I have this set up on my 10 gal; check out the link in my sig if you want to take a look and see what I could grow with it.

Try yard sales, some times you can pick up the tank, light and hood for 5.00 or so. randy
