And found at ton of rocks at a new building site all piled up. Took me 6 trips to get them to the car. Found it's a good place to find them.

I always wanted to do that! usually i'll just get these orange landscaping rocks in my yard and smash them with a sledgehammer.

Of course! instead of mulch in their garden beds, they have almost fist (small fist) sized rocks. Theres probobly a million of them. 5 or so could go missing, and none would be the wiser....SHHHHHH ;)

lol, im game for whenever.

When the people on the corner cheated their insurance company (long story short, their daughter left her curling iron on in the basement, bured 2 rooms, and they demolished the house ((the original farmhouse for the farmland that our help was built on)) and built a HUGE new one, because of cheating their insurance), but they pulled out this HUGE tree stump With this awesome root system. Me and my neighbor tied a chain around it, and hauled it home using his moms envoy. And we put in one of his HUGE reptile enclosures. His savaahna (dino) loves it, but i think it would be absoloutly boss in a huge aquaruim.

Tree stumps can be awesome landscaping pieces, too. Very cool.

There are rocks all over in the beds around this apartment complex and I've used several but I wanted larger ones. It was neat finding that cleared lot as all the rocks were just piled up waiting for Lady Hobbs to come and get them.

Be careful guys...a homeowner around here got nabbed by police for taking rocks from a construction site. They were piled up for later landscaping use by the landscaping firm...

Doubt they did much to the homeowner...but still...

Isn't it a rule that its only illegal if you get caught?

Seriously though, good point.

oops. Never thought of that? Farmland usually has them stacked up as well or even along the highway where they have done some grading.

I think most of the time you would be okay, but if they are saving the rocks for future landscaping it might be a problem. Probably also depends on where you live. Landscaping rocks more at a premium in the city vs. where I live in the country.

I think most farmers would be quite happy if you wanted to collect rocks from their fields (before/after seeding)...

...but many years ago...we asked a neighbouring farmer if we could take a few rocks from his rock pile and he went ballistic on us:

"We have been breaking our backs for years collecting those rocks from our fields and you just come along and ask to help yourselves? Did you think we sweated all those hours in the hot sun to make it easy for you?"

Are you serious? Very weird. You'd think you'd be helping by taking some of them away.

Here in kansas, we have what is called the flint hills. They blow through some hills with dynamite to make way for the road, and they have all of these lime/sand stone rocks. My neighbors took their saturn vue out for 4 different trips and landscaped their entire yards with it. Aparantly its illegal, but they didnt do anything but clean up the side of the road.

This conversation reminds me about dumpster diving. The same people who cheated their insurance had this HUGE dumpster full of scraps from the building process. It is illegal to take any wood, unless it its inside the dumpster. So me and my friend took his moms envoy again t(with here permission) and started loading in good plywood, osb, 2x4 scraps, and some wood flooring scraps. All of the sudden, a police car comes around the corner, blue lights us, and shines the spotlight on us. We get out of the dumpster, and he said he saw us taking wood. We told him it wasnt illegal if it was in the dumpster, so he called in, talked to some people, and agreed with us. Then he looked into the dumpster, saw all of the good wood, and told us he was going to come by after he got off to get some for himself!

Construction can be so wasteful. If they would just put all of the "scraps" (and I use that term loosely, I have seen 6 foot lengths of 2x4 in some of those dumpsters) in a container and labeled it as "free" I would be willing to bet it would mostly be gone in a day. Would save the company money, too.

Not to mention that the home owners have to pay for the dumpster, and they pay by the lb of trash. We probobly saved them 500 lbs of scrap that one night.

Yup, no doubt you did.

My son just purchased 3 pallets of 2x4's from Home Depot. The wood had gotten wet and was difficult to plane but is fine for numerous projects. So my question was: THEN WHERE IS MY AQUARIUM STAND! sheesh

Today my rock hunt continues. I found a big pile of white rock in the country so heading out today for more. I will not be happy if it doesn't pass the acid test after hauling a bunch home. Nothing like having a closet of rocks.

My wife and I had our wedding reception on a waterfront park that has a beach that consists souley of rocks washed up on shore that have been smoothed out perfectly from the tide. It's awesome going there to skip rocks because they are all so round and smooth. I plan on going there to get some cool looking rocks for my new tank. At this park, it's okay to take the rocks, so no worries about legal ramifications. As you can see in this picture, there is quite a selection:
