My wife said I could get a new tank, so today I went out and bought a new 20 gallon long. I also bought my first airstone setup. I filled the 20 gallon halfway and put my 12 cory fry into it along with the 6" airstone. So far so good. Eventually, I wanna move the big fishies out of the 10g and into the 20g, and put the fry into the 10g. Gonna be hard with only two filters and one uncycled tank, but I'll figure it out. :)

20 gallon longs are awesome tanks. I would get one if it wasnt so dang hard to find hoods and lights for it.

Well, it would appear you are a rookie when it comes to getting approval. You buy flowers FIRST. THEN you ask. And then you can get a 90g tank without overly upsetting her :)
Jk, congrats on the hoodwink. Little does she know that MTS is already gaining ground, lol.

20g longs look really cool!
after the death incident, i decided to put the FB toads in the tank. what happened is i had the 20g long with community fish, and a canister filter. i went away for 2 weeks, and when i came back i had 6PPM of ammonia in it, and most of my stock was dead. The sailfin molly that really liked me and always wanted my attention and the ID shark that always liked me too had to go to the LFS along with the other survivors, since then i only had 3 tanks and i couldnt move them, so i gave them to my lfs for free. a few weeks later, i came to the same LFS, and i saw my molly again, and he came running towards me in the tank.
good luck with yours! it sucks having to get "permission" from your wife, doesnt it?

...what do you mean? That's the way it IS. Don't question the lay of the land...

lol, come on. I sometimes dont get why peoples wives say no. If it makes a guy happy, let him have a big glass box with some animals in it!
drum, ive seen the 20g long tanks+hood at petsmart. I bought my 20g long tank along time ago without the hood, but in march i saw one for sale with the hood.

Decorations, gravel, and filter media in the old tank should all be home to that wonderful bacteria you want...transplant some of it to the new tank to jump start the cycle. I've done this in the past, and caught a new tank up in under a week's time.

Mine unfortunately didn't come with one either, and they had none in stock for my 30". I did see one a little while back though at a Petco way out in the middle of nowhere.
Chrona, I'm taking notes, lol.
Do you normally run an airstone 24/7, or is it cool to put a timer on it? I mean, I'm sure it's fine and all, just wanting to save some dough on power this summer and was wondering what others do.
Btw, my wife gives me a monthly fish allowance, lol. *Whipiiiiish!!*

We have quite the opposite thing going on over here. I have to ask my husband. I don't ask so much as suggest that it would be nice to get a bigger tank and then I let that thought sit with him for a while.
When I got my 10g he was hoping I'd sell my 2.5g. I let him think that for a while then when Mother's Day came along I got myself a new baby Betta! HAHA! He just rolls his eyes at me and calls me a "Ffff-nerd" That's a fish-nerd in case you were wondering.:hmm3grin2orange: He secretly likes all the tanks and is really glad he doesn't have to take care of them.

Shall we get back on topic?
You have to cycle that tank before adding 12 corys to it. Do as another poster suggested and transfer everything from your other tank into this one. If you need more gravel, put the new gravel on the bottom and old on top and use the dirty filter media in the new tank, as well. Clean nothing you are transferring over. Check for ammonia spikes in a few days and do water changes accordingly to keep toxic levels down.

Definitely will cycle the tank before switching from 10 to 20, but for now I am not letting any ammonia buildup by doing 50-75% water changes daily (in the fry tank that is). I heard nitrites can be lethal to fry, and now my spare 2.5 gallon is being used to quarantine my sick adult cory who ate some fungus infested eggs (he has pop eye, I can't see him making it through the night). I don't want to cycle a tank till I can get a tank empty to put the fry in, so it'll have to wait for at least a couple of weeks to get started.
I think I'm going to use the ammonia drops on the 20g to get it started, once I can transfer my fry out of it that is.
