View Full Version : Small, Hardy Predator

I've got a 10 gallon tank and I'm thinking about stocking options. I'm probably going to go a community, but while it's empty I want to consider all my options.

Are there any good predators that I could put in it? I'm alright doing a species/specimen only tank. The tank is planted and decorated with drift wood and slate to make a cave. I'm going to be adding more plants soon so it will probably be pretty dense, at least once it grows in. Whatever I get has to be pretty hardy, as it will need to be able to be transported back and forth as I'm a college student. I really like african butterfly fish, but from what I read a ten gallon isn't quite enough room for one.

freshwater toadfish are small and cool. Species only though.

Every site I look at says they max out at 12 inches. A liiiiiittle big for a 10 gallon. XD

For a ten the dwarf puffers are about the best fit.

I had a dwarf puffer in my 3 gallon, and I didn't have great luck with him. He died during a transportation attempt, and since I'm moving back and forth between school and home, I'm weary to try that again.

bumblebee cats are smallish

I've considered getting one of those if I do a community. The akysis vespa stays under 2 inches.

SA bumblebee cats (see sig/album) would work and we've had one in a 10g as population control for platies. They get bigish for a 10g, but as the only fish (except feeders maybe) it could work fairly well.

There are also some small raphael cats. Spotted raphaels stay around 4" long and are very hardy. They'll even talk to you when you move them around!

From what I've been reading it sounds like the SA bumblebees get to be less than 3 inches, and the raphael gets to be around 5. Sounds like the bumblebee will be a bit better of a fit, but their shy-ness (from what I've read) sounds a little boring. If they're gonna be the only fish in my tank I'd like to see them.
