I have a 10 gal tank that used to house 3 hermit crabs. They have all passed on to that ocean in the sky and I, now, would like to put fish in it. We have a large fw tank with some cherry barbs and a fancy guppie. One thought was to transfer the 5 barbs and guppie over with some of the larger tank's water then get something else for the larger tank. While that option seems ok I have an inclination to leave the larger tank as is and start new with the 10gal. Some aquatic life that I'm interested in are shrimp, small pleco, colorful fish, and possibly ADF's. What I'd like to do is, eventually, bring the tank up to my classroom and have it on my desk. This wouldn't be done until mid-August of this year.

I'd like suggestions on what to stock it with after cleaning it.

It sounds like you are interested in tropical, not coldwater, so that opens up the options.

Good, hardy fish for that size tank could be a few Platies (singular: Platy). Maybe 4.
Platies come in lots of colours and colour combos. I began with them and Swordtails. Good and hardy, and they are pretty good little breeders.

You will have to cycle that tank. The smaller the tank volume the more toxic the ammonia and nitrites will get. The water doesn't hold much bacteria but it's on the hard surfaces like decorations, gravel and filter media so if you can transfer over gravel, water and place the used filter media in that 10 gallon (even laying anywhere in the tank for now) you would not have to cycle.

I like a tank full of rasbora's and neon's. Perhaps a few cories for the bottom.

I wouldnt transfer the barbs. 5 of them in a ten gallon is two much (in my opinion). I would definatly stick to the tetra/danio/guppy/platy/ rasbora groups for a ten gallon. A few otto cats in there would be cool as well

Agreed with Severus. 5 barbs in a 10 gallon is not a good idea at all. They will need more room than that.

I have a 10G suggested stocking list and suitable fish (compiled by a fish-friend of mine) on my blog. [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

if you want it for a classroom, frogs would be a hit. 3 ADF's, and 5 danios would be cool

Werd on the frogs. They're fun/funny to watch swim.

Thanks for the help folks. This tank will be more for myself than my students. Allthough, they'll be able to see it. I'm planning on having a larger tank that they'll take a more active role in maintaining. This 10gal will be something for me to have on my desk as a sort of stress reliever :12:
