I don't know specific species of puffers that well, but I do know that most, if not all, of them are very aggressive to each other and other fish. I have a pea puffer, and it's only an inch long including the tail, and I have to keep him in his own tank.

Figure eights and red-eyes are good choices for a 55g. Both get a decent size (4"). It will have to be a specie tank though as all puffers will be aggressive towards other species.

If I'm not mistaken, red-eyes are freshwater. Figure 8s will require brackish water to be happy though. Whatever species you get, check up on them before buying them to make sure you get the right water conditions. Also check the water they're kept in at the fish store ... many keep brackish species in freshwater.

Most puffer fish are very aggressive and do best kept in tank by themselves.
Do your rersearch.lol

Check out the bottom of the page in these links. You will see more links to other puffer fish.
I think a puffer does best in a tank smaller then a 55.

A 55g tank with one fish 4-6 inches would be kinda boring. Alrighty maybe something else then lol.:ssuprised:

A friend of mine had a red eye when i was a kid, he kept it with rainbow fish and danios in a 55 and it chased the other fish mercilessly for a few days then once he realized that he could never ever catch them he left them alone unless they came too close to him then hed chase them for just a couple seconds and go back to his business. Not saying that its nessisarily a good idea but if i were to try tankmates i would either try another puffer and keep a close eye on them or some really active fish that a puffer could never catch.

Dwarf Puffer are VERY small but if you put like 10-20 of them in a 55 im sure that will make a fun tank to watch. a few plants and hiding in there so they dont have to see each other all the time

i know for dwarf puffers you can put 2 in a 10 gal. you can do the math

i'd check out a green spotted puffer, they are a brackish puffer though

You could have a small horde of dwarf puffers in a 55. Maybe around 12-14. :)

Don't most if not all puffer's require some salinity content?
