I have a whisper 60 that used to run two big airstones in two tanks. Now the danged thing can't run even two little sponge filters. What's making this thing frizzle out......weak motor?

How old is it?

I've never had an air pump go bad, and I've been given some that look to be 10+ years old that were probably left outside in the snow for a few years...lol

Never mind. Found the problem.

Took it apart and there are two little plungers in there that the motor makes work. Both plungers have tears in them so no pressure can build up.

Most lfs carry new diaphrams.Just make sure you bring those with you to compare to the new ones. There are many different sizes.

Should be able to McGyver the gaskets out of something.

Mine all have rubber diaphrams.

Kensfish.com has the Whisper 60 repair kits for the best price I could find online.

Thanks Todd. It's not like the things cost a fortune and can't be replaced cheap enough. I will take a look at Kens but more than likely will just plug up the one air outlet and use it as a single source. I only use the double when setting up my breeding tank. One side still works fair.

Its only a two minute surgery and its real simple. There should only be a small screw in the center. It will also run more quiet once repaired.

The repair kit includes new silicone flapper valves too. I agree the cost is a bit high compared to the price of a new pump, but at least it's one less drop in the landfill.
