View Full Version : Transferring Fry

I recently bought a bunch of female guppies and a day after putting them into my tank I was quite surprised to see some fry.

I found them hiding in a deep jungle of cabomba and wouldn't have known they were there if the (I'm assuming) mother guppy hadn't kept going back there. Was she "checking on" the fry or just giving birth to more? Do they release all of their fry at once? I also noticed that she seemed very distraught when I transferred about four of the fry to my breeding tank. (Sadly one of the fry did not make it so I stopped the transfer and I'm pretty sure there is at least one but maybe more fry still in the main tank.)

My question is, how do I safely transfer fry from my main tank to my breeding tank? I just used my net this time. They are very hard to catch since I have to maneuver around the plants.

Just an observation I had: My breeding tank is holding twelve very young gold endlers including more than half of those as fry but I can clearly see a difference between the endler fry and guppy fry, mostly in their color and visibility of fins. I didn't think they'd be so easy to tell apart.

I fed them some frozen daphnia yesterday but it seems like the daphnia might be too large for the smaller fry. What is readily available (that I don't have to special order) that two-six day old fry can eat? Unfortunately, the kid at Petsmart was totally useless at recommending something and I haven't been able to make it out to my LFS.

Thanks!!!

Ground up flakes will be adequate food for the fry. Newly hatch brine shrimp will be eaten with enthusiasm.

Why did you move them? They would have been fine in the main tank and could have hid there with proper hiding places. They do not release their fry but have a live birth.

I know that they have live birth but do they let them all out at once?

I moved them because I also have rasboras in the tank and didn't want the fry to get eaten. I'm not sure which ones were doing it but the plants kept getting uprooted, causing the fry to lose their cover.
