Got some elodea that's growing like... well, like a weed. Several inches of growth in the week and a half since I got it. I'd like to propagate it and use it to replace some of the tall plastic plants in my tank. I think I understand the general idea, but I have some questions.

My impression is, I can simply cut the stem wherever I feel is appropriate, and then stick that new piece in the substrate, and that plant will put down roots and continue to grow. Is this correct?

Will the old part that I cut grow back? Or, does cutting at a certain point effectively end growth on the old piece?

You got it. Trim it and plant the cut portion. The cut portion will grow and the portion it was cut from will form branches and continue to grow. The stuff is almost unstoppable. If the bottom portions loss most of there leaves or are looking ratty, just cut the tops and replant and throw out the bottoms.
