Currently I just replaced my community fish for some SA cichlids. I have a 5 to 6 inch Hypsophrys nicaraguensis (HN), a green terror (2.5 in), and a green severum(4 in). The HN is whupping everyone's butt around the 40 gallon fish tank. He chases them around on a whim but doesn't seem to bite them (not that I can see anyway). I then started to notice that the fins on both the severum and GT are showing splits. Plus, they both hover around the top corners in the tank. I've put tons of hiding places but I just can't calm the feud. I've run out of ideas on what to do. I'm thinking it's time to swap out either of these fish. I'm torn between who to keep and who to let go. They all look amazing. The HN looks bland now but I'm told it'll look much more colorful in the future. I like the glow in the dark strips on the green terror. I like the slip body shape of the severum. I don't really know what to do.

I should mention I don't know much about what's out there other then my local aquarium store. I'm looking for some colorful fish to add to the collection who would live in harmony. I'm specifically looking for some bright red or yellow fish with a plethora of colors in between. So basically, can I have my cake and eat it too?

You're gonna need a much bigger tank...I keep my nics in a 75g and that's even too small. Mine are nearing the adult size, they're all about 6-8" and starting to get brilliant colors.

I wouldn't add any fish to that mix right now and that tank isn't big enough for a permanent home for any of those species.

Have you looked into Dwarf Cichlids? I was talking to my LFS guy on adding some more colorful fish to my tank and he had some very nice suggestions. I'm sure the colors will vary but here's a really cool looking one ...

They are less aggressive than the larger varieties and are usually between 2-3 inches. From what I've read, you need a male and a female that will bond, to get the brighter colors. Along with diet.

Others I was thinking about were German Blue Ram or Bolivian Ram
