Anybody have a Rena heater hooked up to the intake line of their XP? I'm looking at buying a 300w for an XP4 which will eventually go on my 55g. (I bought a 70g and a 125g off of Craig's list, just don't know where to put them yet)

I had 2 over a few month period cook 2 tanks. I got rid of the 3rd not wanting to take a chance. I know now why they are a discontinued product. I replaced them with the new fluval heaters. So far I am very impressed with them.

Thanks for replying. Much appreciated. Does anybody know of an external heater other than the Hydor ETH? I have an ETH. It works great, but it cuts down the flow on my Fluval FX5 canister filter. The ETH has a smaller diameter flow through tube (5/8") compared to the FX5 outlet tube. Aha! The ETH should fit on the XP4. But now I need an external that will fit the 3/4" tube of the FX5.....

i feel sorry for Sailor but i have 4 of them 3-200's and 1-150 and have had no problems. I looked on the company webpage and they have no mention of a recall/discontinued so i think Sailor is wrong when he says they are discontinued. I love these heaters and i think they are more attractive than other heaters and they do not require external clearance to heat the water as they heat the watter that passes through them. Great design for people who make there own back drops or just don't want all those tubes and spouts in the water. Here is pick of my 150 gallon with 2 Rena smartheaters 200watt models both tuned to within 1 degree of each other.

I would recommend them!!!

We can not order them anymore at the store as the rep has told us they are discontinued. I don't know if they are replacing them or what. It happens all the time in the pet industry......aquatics and cat and dog seem to be hit the worst in this respect. In the aquatic side the companies spend huge money developing new and improved product. The bad part of this is when they do have a new product a lot of the time some items or product are replaced when there was nothing wrong with them in the first place. We usually only find out through a rep or on our invoices that a product is discontinued. The few smart heaters I had I purchased where when they first were released, maybe all the bugs were not worked out of them yet. I did like the design and looks thats for sure. I am not bashing rena by any means as I love the xp line of cannisters, hagen could have learned a thing or 2 from them lol.

I bought a Hydor 400w glass submersible heater for the 55g and it seems to be working very good. I can tell because I moved the temp from 80 to 77 to 82 degrees and it didn't take long for the heater to catch up. When I move the FX5 to the 125g I'll be starting, I'll put an XP4 with the Hydor ETH external heater on the 55g and use the 400w submersible in the 125g.
