Today I noticed my 46 gallon tank was shocking me, when my finger was put in the tank, and I assumed it was my stealth heater so I just unplugged it and sure enough the shocking stopped. Anyway, I will probably contact marineland, and see if they will send me a glass visi-therm to replace it, under the warranty. Would they send me a glass one instead of the new stealth pro?
Anyway, Im wondering what to do until I get the heater. Obviously its not good for the fish to have a malfuctioning heater, but I can't not have a heater right? I know I should have a back up but I don't....

What's the avg temp of the room it's in? If nothing else you could use a space heater to raise the temp of the tank room to say 78F. This'll keep the tank, and the fish, just as warm.

The average tempurature is around 80F. But, it flucuates ALOT because it usually gets too hot in the room so I have to opend the windows, and it goes from 84F it 75F, the flucuation is what Im concerned about.

The pro is pretty good, I have 4 right now. The glass ones are a bit scary IMO.

Whats wrong with the glass ones? The reason I want the glass is because there have been multipul cases where the pros have blown up...

I would just about guess that this time of year when the air is so dry that you are simply getting static from walking across the floor. Same thing happens to me. If it's just a slight jolt after walking up to the tank, that would be my guess.

I dont recommend any glass heaters, any make or model. If you do not have the confidence in the pro, go to a different brand that is a "plastic" type of heater. Glass stinks IMO. Also, I have not heard anything about exploding heaters in a long time, I have 4 like I said earlier and love them.

They break and will kill your fish. Get the glass, you seem to have your mind set.

I thought all heaters were glass, infact all my heaters are glass and i have never had a problem with them. They work just fine in my opinion but there is obviously somehting wrong with them.

Find out what Marineland says first and go from there. Tell them that you'd prefer a glass replacement heater as you don't trust the Pros now.

There are glass (typically borisilicate (sp?) glass, stainless steel, titanium, and composite heaters. Glass is most prevalent. You need to get away from glass heaters if you've got destructive fish like Oscars who will often break their heaters. Some aquarium owners install titanium (salt or fresh) or stainless steel (FW only) grounding probes that simply plugs into a grounded electrical outlet. A grounding probe can save one's life in the case of broken heaters or accidental submersion of a light or something.

All electrical devices leak some voltage when submersed in an aquarium. It is just that the average one can only be detected by a meter. Your fish can not be shocked because they are not grounded. Most electrical devices designed for submersion in an aquarium have a warning that says to unplug them before you stick your hands into the water. This is because they all leak and there is always the chance that you can be fatally shocked. You should still replace any one that has noticeable voltage leaks .

So I can leave the heater on, until I get a new one?

Maybe read that again.

I read it. I will be replacing it, but you said the fish can't be shocked, so I thought you meant it would be ok for a little bit (until I get the new one), I guess not...

I woke up and the tank was on the cooler side, so I decided to plug the heater back in, just to see what would happen. Anyway, I plugges back in and waites a few minutes, then touched the water, and there was no shock. I tried it a couple other times throughout the day and still no shock... I think Im going to wait a few days, and see... Or do I need to replace it?
