I've got an FX5 on a 55g I'm just cycling. It's got a Hydor ETH on it now. I'm planning on moving the ETH to another tank I'm getting and mating it to an XP4 (90g tank). I've purchased a 400w submersible heater for the 55g and the FX5. The reason I'm moving the ETH is because it cuts the flow of the FX5 way down because of the smaller diameter flow through on the heater (5/8" on the ETH compared to 3/4" on the FX5).
So.....what's the word on the Rena Filstar XP4? I've read on another forum that there is a problem with the impeller on the XP4. Anyone experience this?

Personal opinion, but I would put the FX5 on your 90G as it is a larger capacity higher flow filter and put the XP4 on the 55G.
I have an XP4 and it has given me no problems, some people report it trapping air and having a very difficult time getting it out which results in the filter spraying microbubbles. I have also heard of the impeller itself getting some broken needles due to the force of the motor. These problems are rare and were primarily isolated to early models, it was caused because Rena just slapped another level onto the XP3 and increased the motors power. they did not do much improvements on the impeller(which was the main cause to these issues), I think now they have made a sturdier impeller capable of withstanding the more powerful motor. As said Ive owned an XP4 for around 3 years now and it hasnt given me any problems yet.
