Well, been browsing here for a few weeks and thought it was about time I did the polite thing and introduced myself.

The basics: 36 yr old male, single, work in healthcare.

Had a small 10g tank as a young teen, with guppies, mollies & neon tetra's.

I recently purchased a used 55g tank from an estate sale. Set it up and had it running for 4 weeks. Was about to go out and purchase some fish when I stumbled across this site and learned all about cycling tanks. So, I'm doing the fishless cycling now.

My nitrites just came back 0, ammonia 0, nitrates about 30, PH 7.3.

So looks like I'm ready to do a water change and start stocking.

Any suggestions for some small to medium size fish for a community tank? Pretty colors are a bonus.

Thanks!

I find it hard to suggest fish for other people as I feel that a person needs to have strong affinity for their fish, and with no idea which way buying are leaning I do not want to suggest something that you might regret buying down the road.

Also keep in mind that not all fish get along. So once you start stocking your tank you start closing off your options.

A few categories that i like are.

Loaches
Rainbowfish
Gouramis

All would be worth checking out.

P.S. You will get more responses if you ask this question in one of the other forums like the general discussion.

Welcome to the Aquatic Community,
I might suggest Dwarf Gourami, Sunset Dwarf Gourami, Powder Blue Gourami, Neon Dwarf Gouramis Originating in the waters of India, the Dwarf Gourami is not only beautiful but they can be particularly hardy as well. The male is more colorful while the females are less colorful. Usually the female Dwarf Gourami is gray in appearance. There are a couple of color varieties including the Blue and the Flame Red. They make a great addition to a fully cycled community tank and are easy to care for. They should accept most food including flakes, freeze-dried, frozen and live foods. If you notice the coloration on your dwarf gouramis starting to fade, try supplementing their diet with freeze dried blood worms or live foods once in a while. They are not picky eaters. The Blue Gourami (Trichogaster trichopterus) is also referred to as the Three Spot Gourami and sometimes even the Opaline Gourami. It's called the three spot because of the three spots on its body. The first two are visible (one on the middle of the body and one near the caudal fin) and the third spot is the eye. They can become aggressive and territorial with other tank mates and may be even more aggressive with other male blue gouramis. Good luck.

Welcome! I'm right across the bridge from you. There are lots of large tanks locally on craigslist too, if you decide to get another one, and lots of times you can get them for free.

Speaking of free tanks, the last little tank I bought was from one of the online pet stores. They notified me this past week that I was a winner of a $50 gift certificate for being a weekly contest winner. Heck, I didn't even know there was a contest! So I picked out another tank and decor, and it's on the way. I don't know where I'll put it. I don't have anymore empty flat surfaces!
