I just started using a T5 HO light set up for my plants, consisting of a single center strip. Now the entire top of my aquarium is open. What can I cover it with that will not diminish any of my light benefit? Thanks

Glass lid.The best thing for all aquariums but especially planted as it will keep co2 in and allow very little evaporation. It will block the smallest amount of light but will still be the best bet.

I run my tanks without tops. There is a bit of evaporation but no problems otherwise.

That depends on how dry your house is.Our 55 gal parrot tank has std el cheapo lids on them.I lose 2inches a week from that one but my 58 with the glass lid hasnt lost so much as a half inch in the past month.Other factors such as household pollutants come into play as well. With our dogs and cats and general dustiness my tank would be full of garbage with an open top,not to mention full of stupid housecat !

OK,do I have to use real glass or can I get by with plexi-glass?

Plexiglass will frost over and get scratched easily. The all glass lids are hinged and made to fit all std size tanks. They cost about10-20 bucks.
