So in the DIY CO2 instructions I found here:
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

you generate CO2 by adding yeast and sugar to water. I think this whole setup is really cool, especially considering how cheap it is.

Now my question is basically... you're adding sugar to stagnant water. My main question: is this not going to get really nasty in a pretty short amount of time?

Yeah pretty much, that's why you put the gas from the contraption in your tank and not any of the stuff that makes it thumbs2: . Make sure you use the proper tubing for co2 or you can get a nasty mess on your hands.

I add sugar to tap water (on the few occasions I use CO2). I use no stagnet water.

If you cut the tip of the airline at an angle, you can pull the line thru the hole in the cap with a pair of pliers and most of the time need no silicone at all. If it pulls thru very hard, you know you got a tight seal. Make sure the airline is NOT going into the solution. Just pull it thru the top about an inch.

I assumed he meant stagnant as in you don't change out the water, you just let it sit there and ferment, not that you use stagnant water in the beginning. Not sure which one he meant in this case.

technically yes but baking soda, yeast, a pinch of brown sugar and 2 cups of white cane sugar makes it last longer.

I got 4 2 liters on my 52g tank, every 4-6 weeks I change out two of them, shaking them every morning.

Mine has an accumulator as well so I dont get muck just the gas.

its not really stagnant water as there is a chemical process going on inside the bottle, just because its smooth as glass on top doesnt mean things arent happening underneeth.

There are several recipes out there that work. some use gelatin for slow release of sugar but I cant figure that one out without the wife getting ticked off.

I use
pure cane sugar
brown cane sugar
brewers yeast( lasts longer and ferments better, sometimes add a can of frozen juice to it for wine later on)
baking soda
2 liter bottle
