Hi, on the weekend I spotted a platy fry in my tank. I tried to get it out to safety but the task proved a bit too tricky. Last night I spotted another. There a 2 platy fry swimming around in the plants!!!! I know they were born last Monday night (because my female platy looked weirdly flat to me on Tuesday morning) so they are just over a week old. Should I attempt to get them out again or should I assume if they've survived this long they'll be fine?

im not certified to answer your question.. but i think if they have survived this long, and have enough hiding places..that they will live.

it depends on what all is in the tank. Certainly the longer they last, the more likely they are to survive. If you wanted to be positive, you'd have to move them to another tank. But then, you have to ask yourself how many platies you really want, because once they start breeding they're not going to stop.

Thanks for your replies.
No I dont want to be over run with platys but I really want my first two to survive.
I've got an ADF, pleco and silver shark in there that may see the platy fry as food but the platys are about 1 cm long now and one of them has started to show colour so I'm hoping their old enough to survive. If not any tips on getting them out?

if you had to get them out id suggest doing it in the middle of a water change so there is less water at least.. ? WHERE ARE THE EXPERTS??

netting small quick fish certainly isn't easy, especially if they've got lots of plants and whatnot to hide in. My only advise is to use a net in each hand, or a net and something solid or the palm of your hand. Try to corner them that way, come at them with the net and use your other hand to block their escape route.
Personally, though, I'd just leave them and see how they do, given that they've already made it to 1cm.

I personally wouldn't bother, there are probably more in there that you haven't seen and if there aren't then there soon will be. If there are plenty of hiding places then some will survive.
If you do want to catch them though then good luck!

Yeah they will most likely live. If they have made it this far...they are the most fit. You could take them out, but they are so young that that could cause enough to stress to kill them. I would just leave them in and hope for the best. If they die...others will follow.

Yea. If they survived on their own, means you have two fighters :D, and they should be alright the rest of the way.

I agree
In nature, a few out of hundreds of fish fry survive. I saved my guppy fry and now i have to give guppies away... :scry:
Better just let nature take its course or your tank will be overrun with platys...
