View Full Version : General Temperature Preferences of Barbs?

So, whilst starting some research on barbs (specifically, gold, checkered, and ruby) I found quite a few places that mention they can and sometimes prefer temperatures that are subtropical. Well, around 72 F. (68 - 75)

I checked out a couple books, and again, the same. Contrast that with some other species of barbs, like cherry barbs or 5 banded barbs, that are recorded as preferring tropical temps in the high 70's. I can dig it. Lots of different barb species that come from varying habitats.

However, it is suggested in the Primer sticky that barbs in general prefer upper 70's.

Does it really matter (as in the case of White Clouds, who actually color up better around 70) or is it just a range barbs are adaptable to?

Mainly, the reason I'm asking is that whatever barb species I choose would be mixed in with WCMM's, and I'd like them to have similar temperature preferences. My instinct tells me to go with the preference of the individual species as opposed to the genus as a whole. Yes?

Yes, go with the individual species.
