Well this is 2 firsts in one I have never posted on any site before and I am new at the whole aquarium thing in general. My name is Monique and I live in Ontario Canada. I just bought a 50 gallon tank and am at a complete loss on fish that go well together...I should mention its a fresh water tank. Anyone have any suggestions...liked a huge Oscar fish but nasty buggers eat everything smaller

Welcome to the site! first you have to cycle your tank, so your fishies dont suffer. read about it in the free ebook on the left menu, or read the fishless cycle thread.

Welcome to the A.C.!
A 55 is a BARE minimum for an oscar, assuming that you have AWESOME filtration and do frequent and large water changes.

a oscar could work in a 50g, but go for 2 Jack dempseys instead. They get big and 2 can fir in a 50g with good filtration
...hi from the Prairies! Ask lots of questions! We might confuse you...but you'll be better for it! thumbs2:

Welcome aboard
50 Gallons is already a nice size as a beginners tank.
But I would opt for a seperate thread, to help you setting your aquarium up.
There are so many things to think of, and I would say just not directly start with Oscars or Jack Dempseys. In my oppinion your tank is way too small for either of those animals.
But dont panic, there are so many great fish to keep, with lots of personality, great behaviour and not killing each and everything. And those fish even com from the same area as JDs or Oscars:hmm3grin2orange:
OK, so shoot your questions...I am just preparing myself for the answersthumbs2:

Welcome to the board.
I found this website to be of help when I was trying to determine fish compatibility early on. Just keep in mind that it is a rough guide as no two fish are alike and sometimes will allow you to house unusual tankmates together.

Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask, as I bet between all of the board members on here, atleast one of us has owned any fish you are thinking about getting.
