2-3 Watts a gallon should do the trick.

WalMart $7 2 pack of GE 6500K Daylight CFL. I use them on all my tanks.

Sark i will remember that for next time..more questions/update...the CFL i picked up says it is similar to 40W of soft white light incandescent.. that's good for my 10g? ALSO! i picked up some amazon swords..washed 4 snails off..then dug them in to the gravel..some of the tips are brown and the same two are taller than the tank..do i have to trim them..? if so, how much?how?...

And how's Aqueon Aquarium Plant Food? hope its okay because i just bought it..

Soft white = around 3200k, much too low a colour temp for a planted tank. Around 5200k-7000k is a good range with 6200k-6700k being more ideal.

On a 10G tank I'd run two 15W or one 26W 6500k CFL.

I have no idea on the plant food. I use Seachem's Flourish line.

I would not use any plant food unless it looks like you need it. IE plants not growing well.

Look for bulbs marked as daylight, cool, or pure white to be sure your in a good color range. The daylight and cools are usually about the same around 6500k.
