Okay...so I'm grumpy...and I know I'm nitpicking...but this subject is endlessly fascinating for me...so I'll toss it out to you guys...

I've actually done research on this, and written papers...so bear with me...

Most people are concerned with their appearance...they want to look 'nice'...or look their best...

...some people spend hours grooming...others minutes...but most groom...try and buy flattering clothes and flattering accessories...and be reasonably fashionable...

Given that that's the case, why:

1. Do people wear 'house-clothes' out in public? By house-clothes I mean saggy sweats, torn slacks, stretched out t-shirts, stuff with permanent stains on it...

2. Why do people wear eye-glass frames years out of style?

3. Why do people wear pants that are too short?

4. Why do people wear too short black pants with white socks?

5. Why do women esp. wear shoes with 'toe overhang'...if your toes stick out past the front of your shoes...or worse...grip the front of your shoes...then your shoes don't fit...

6. Why do men esp. wear brown knee-highed socks and sandals with their shorts?

...all these...and others...open for discussion...

And why do you see young women, especially, that already weigh 300 pounds at 22 years old with a gut hanging down over their crotch? And yes, wearing spandex!

I used to laugh when I lived in FL. You would always see these guys with socks and sandles. LOL

Only reason I wear knee high brown socks and sandles with my shorts is, its the only thing that will go with my fawn vest and peaked golf cap. :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

Dont know if you guys ever had a song released over there in the 80's called physical by Olivia Newton John, but over here, it started a craze of tight lycra bike pants with leg warmers, and girls of all sizes was into this fashion, it gave a new meaning to a body part of a camel, that really should be kept in the sand:wink2: :hmm3grin2orange:

...now for the record...this interest isn't because I'm a fashion icon...I'm totally wash and wear, bluejeans and t-shirts...never coloured my hair...attempting to age gracefully...

...but I retain the ability to clean up well...:hmm3grin2orange:

What bothers me is people wearing their pants so low and big, they have to hold their pants up by the crotch. Every time i see it, i just want to go pants them and tell them to get a belt.

This one as a former eye glass wearer I can easily explain.....COST! Because of needing to pay for extra's on glasses and not having insurance it was a $300 expense I didn't need to cough up if my current glasses were working fine:11:

The other items I really have no clue as I haven't seen myself doing them.

its not that i dont care what i look like, its that i am not trying to impress anyone, mainly myself. You have to admit that people who spend too much time taking care of their appearance have to impress themselves first. Obviously, I am not going to wear pink ruffles. Anything plain will do for me, you wont find me saying "ok, what outfit am i going to wear?"

and yes, you can pick on/interview me, i dont mind.

During the summer, its usually shorts, and a bass pro shops tshirt, or a drum camp t shirt, or a wrestling tshirt, or a tapout tshirt. I also wear my favorite pair of crappy shoes. I absoloutly HATE buying new shoes. I love the broken-in feel.

What also bothers me is people that spend 100 dollars on ripped jeans with stains on them. I buy 15 dollar jeans at walmart, and they end up getting ripped up by accident. The only expensive pair of jeans i have was 50 bucks, and a girl bought those for me.

Polo shirts are fine, and i have a few. I wear those out on dates and such.

I also have a couple pairs of nice black dress pants, and some nice button up shirts and a few good ties, along with a suit.

Ive seen people who do their hair to go get the mail. THAT, my friends, is over doing it.

:laugh1blue:

My hairdresser owns his own store in town and he is on 24/7 call to come around and do my hair for me (for special events).

I have to admit, I am the kind of person who LOVES my clothes and my appearance. Gowing up with my dad being a top investment banker, has taught me that appearance is one of the most important things. I know, I have a few crappy clothes that I take fishing and that, but most of my clothes are very smart. I mean, if you saw me out on the wharf fishing (:4:), there is no way in hell that you could tell my lifestyle. However, if you saw me with my g/f, out with my mates, or at a special event, then you could ***possibly*** get a picture of my lifestyle.

For me it's mostly shorts, tee shirts/blouses and flip flops. I believe in comfort first!! And in Florida, that means shorts! The only time I wear pants/dresses and "regular" shoes is if we are going somewhere special or to work. Not much into style either, never have been, never will be. My clothes are not torn or stained, they fit me correctly, always clean and pressed so I'm good....but I have to admit that I hate, absolutely hate shopping for clothes....

BUT, I have to admit that I do have a couple of pet peeves about clothing. The first of which is young men wearing their pants at half mast. I understand where the look came from (jail garb) but to me it looks like they can't dress themselves. The second is overweight people who wear clothing way too small for their bodies. I do not need to see their bare belly fat bouncing all over the place. And they seem to think they look good??? I am overweight by about 30 pounds and I would never, ever consider letting my belly hang all out there......

...kimmer! I'll concede on the glasses and the associated high costs...

I think I was thinking more of people who continue to get new glasses...but keep recycling the frames...or refuse to something a bit more modern...

...and they do exist...I've met them! ;)

...well sure...there's a point where you can spend too much time on your appearance...and the current trend towards plastic surgery sure doesn't help keep things in perspective...

...but I bet you care more than you think...what's the bottom line? What's the worst you'll look if you have to go out in public?

...well now! Can't let that get by us...now you have to post a picture!!! Of yourself...:ezpi_wink1:

Appearance is very important! Studies vary a bit with the data and results they present...but our first impressions of people are made within 30 seconds - 5 min....

...and it takes a much longer period of time to change a first impression...

I'm SO happy to see longer shirts back in style! Both for myself...

...and for my 15 year old...

...I hated all the 'sex-pot' clothes that were out there for young girls...had a heck of a time shopping for her when she was aged 10-13...

...but that's another thread...

...yes, that's in part why I like to ask these questions...

...I know it's hard to find larger-sized fashionable clothes...and with so many larger girls I don't know why that is exactly...the market is there for the manufacterers...but sizing seems to be getting smaller and smaller...

...and if a young girl can't fit into a teeny-tiny XL...not only does she feel worse about herself, image-wise, but then has to resort to the Plus-size shops or wearing unfashionable clothes...

...which is why I think some girls let it all hang out...but I wonder what they think they look like? Do they know and not care? Or do they think they don't look as 'off' as others find them?

It's this 'self-perspective' I find so interesting...

I think you have some of each really. Some know perfectly well what they look like and don't care which I can understand to a certain extent. The others though honestly believe they look really, really good. Which is just delusional. Kind of the opposite of the anorexic person thinking they're too fat...

ok i have a perfect example. Me and my buddy we're doing a landscaping job last fall. I wear white undershirts and whitish khakis when i landscape. I had to leave the job for a class orientation at school. I was wearing that outfit, but covered in dirt and grimy work boots, and it wasnt really a big deal, because i dont know those people or care about them.

Rue
05-26-2007, 09:33 PM
...no no! That doesn't count! You were wearing work clothes...it's perfectly acceptable to wear work clothes when necessary! It would be different if you put your dirty landscaping clothes on deliberately to go to orientation!

2manyfish...I daresay you're right...I guess I wish I could just see what the person themselves see when they look in the mirror...

...I do know we see different things on different days, depending on our mood and the reflective quality of the mirror...so I mean in general...

Fashion Faux-pas of the Day: I was holding a table at the coffee shop while hubby stood in the very long line...

...a very pretty, thin girl...all dressed up was also waiting. She obviously put a lot of effort into her outfit...

However, for some reason...she had on black pantihose and black VERY short shorts...so short you could see the reinforced part of the pantihose that goes around the top of your leg...

....*ick!*...

yeah but it still answers the question of the worst I'd look for going out in public, pretty frickin dirty! but then you'd also be surprised to see how well i clean up for, say, a wedding (my buddy just got married last night)
