I thought we might play a little game. Identify the fish. However gts it right gets to post the next species to be identified. (just nothing to obscure)

Below you find the first species to be identified. You only get to se a part of the fish as it would be to easy otherwise
http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/idpic.jpg

rollie
04-19-2006, 04:28 AM
red tailed cat fish

William
04-19-2006, 04:42 AM
I knew it what to easy ;-)

Should have let you se even less of the fish. Your turn to post something to be identified.

rollie
04-19-2006, 04:51 AM

William
04-19-2006, 04:59 AM
If you say so. What is this.

http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/idpic2.jpg

William
04-19-2006, 05:01 AM
You get a goldstar if you can pinpoint the type/origin.

rollie
04-19-2006, 05:19 AM
never seen it before. but it is of thr catfish or plec family.

William
04-19-2006, 05:23 AM
Neither. It's a cichlid.

Lets give it some time and se if someone else can identify it.

rollie
04-19-2006, 05:29 AM
it from lake tanganyika!

Full3R
04-19-2006, 07:17 AM
Pike cichlid from northern or central america?

William
04-19-2006, 07:27 AM
lake tanganyika is correct. so what is the species.

rollie
04-19-2006, 10:43 AM
juliidochromis marlieri

William
04-19-2006, 06:35 PM
juliidochromis is correct. but it's not marlieri

rollie
04-19-2006, 06:38 PM
guess i do not know, then.

William
04-19-2006, 06:54 PM
Julidochromis transcriptus "gombi"

William
04-19-2006, 06:57 PM
How about this one. I fear it might be hard but since it is a native fish fore some of you it might be easier than I think.

http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/idpic3.jpg

rollie
04-19-2006, 07:05 PM
if that is not an AM. BULLHEAD, something bad wrong. i had one for years.

Full3R
04-19-2006, 07:08 PM
looks like the head of my salmon tail catfish :P

William
04-19-2006, 07:13 PM
Actually no it isn't. It¨s another American catfish that look very much like the Bullhead.
(atleast according to picture info)

rollie
04-19-2006, 07:53 PM
sorry , picture infor dead wrong, no way!!!

William
04-19-2006, 08:07 PM
I considered that and checked other picures of this species Am channel catfish and found those pictures to make sense to. What made me think that the ID was correct is that bullheads have black or yellow barbels (deending on species, there are 3) while the channel cat has grey. Granted the barbels on the picture are a bit on the dark side but I would still call them grey. The fact that the upper jaw is longer than the lower jaw also suggest that it indeed is a Channel catfish.

It is however very hard to say without sing the entire fish. Seing the tailfin would make it very easy to know for sure.

William
04-19-2006, 09:29 PM
If anyone else want to post a new pic so that i can take part in the game they are welcome to do so

Full3R
04-19-2006, 09:32 PM

Reef shark?

William
04-20-2006, 12:04 AM
No. There has been no need to so far. Just thought I should point it out before someone starts doing it.

It is a shark but not a reef shark. Think bottom dwelling.

Full3R
04-20-2006, 12:07 AM
im not too good with sharks, i oly know of lemon, bull, wobbegong, reef, great white, grey nurse, whale, tiger and a few others but no bottom dwellers

William
04-20-2006, 12:51 AM
OK. I am conting two of those as bottom dweller as they spend a lot of time at the bottom and one of them are the fish in the picture.

That should narrow it down a bit for you.

Full3R
04-20-2006, 01:42 AM
im gunna say lemon because i seem to remember those lil whisker thingys on them

William
04-20-2006, 01:51 AM
Nope. Consider which ones you can say for sure that it isn't, like whale sharks.

Full3R
04-20-2006, 01:53 AM
is it a wobbegong coz ive only seen the ones that look like rocks, but him being a bottom dweller woulda been my first choice

William
04-20-2006, 02:02 AM
Nope a wobbegong looks like this:

William
04-20-2006, 02:16 AM
I will leave the shark out there for a while before giving the answer but will in the meantime post this which hopefully should be easier to identify.

William
04-20-2006, 05:51 AM

Full3R
04-20-2006, 06:07 AM
you know what, i was gunna guess nurse shark but i thught they lived out in open waters

William
04-20-2006, 06:21 AM
Yes. But they also spend a lot of time resting on the bottom like in the picture.

rollie
04-20-2006, 10:51 AM
it the phenacogrammus interruptus, it an african tetra!!

William
04-20-2006, 06:04 PM
Correct you are. Let me guess that you breed them.

Does anyone want to post a new pic. Guessing You still don't want to rollie.
(there is a How to guide earlier in this thread if you changed your mind)

rollie
04-20-2006, 06:14 PM
if i did try ,i might end up sutting you down and we don"y want that!!

William
04-20-2006, 06:18 PM
Not a problem. You can't really cause any problem with the site itself. You don't have access to any functions that could do that and if you tried doing something that could be a problem the site won't let you do it.

You just type

reveals the name. :P

A little bit of info on them.
"This is the most commonly seen Snakehead in aquarium stores today. The adults are a far cry from the cute, little, red coloured babies they start out as. This is a fish that really does ‘BITE BACK’. In its native habitat, it will attack anything, even humans, if they go near the nest. It is best if we leave these ‘Critters’ where they belong. This fish is also very predatory and will attack and kill each other, as well as, other fish; so it has to be kept with other big bullies. It is also snakelike in its ability to escape; so be warned, get a padlock! The Snakehead can live long periods out of the water, as long as they stay damp. These fish grow to around 3 feet. Keep this warning in mind when you want to buy the small cute ones!!"

Are these the monsters you breed?
