Ive been looking for a better way to mount my lights without using a canopy, while keeping my options open for a canopy later on.

After brainstorming all sorts of complicated rigs, I finally hit on one very simple design, that could be easily be converted into a canopy.

Its extremely simple so dont laugh. I took the time to construct everything in sketchup. If anyone wants the models I made, let me know.

is it constructed of wood? if so you might have a little trouble if it isn't weather treated as the water vapor coming off the tank might mess with it... however i do like the idea a lot as it would make mounting simple shoplight assemblies much easier

Looks good; simple design that's highly functional . :shappy:

Looks like you also block the lights from being directly viewed with just the addition of one added piece too, if you were so inclined . :ssmile:

There's nothing wrong with 'simple' designs. If it works then there's no reason to make it complicated.

Nice and simple enough to build. May want to add in a splash guard of some sort. Are you going to use a glass top or any sort of lid? Having the wood overlap the top of the tank, may make it hard to open the lid.

One of my tanks has just 2 1x1's that sit on the top of the tank and the light fixture sits on it:p

If I added a lid, it would be as part of a canopy built onto the light stand. :ssmile:

Here are a few shots of my canopy without the doors. It also has a 4ft shop light mounted to the top of it.
I like to keep plants on top.lol The tank is in my living room.
I am making some slider doors for the front and two hinged flap doors on the back.

That canopy looks awesome Ray! I couldnt dream of building something like that. Well, I just finished the stands plus another piece in the middle for additional support. The problem is, I forgot to buy bolts and I really wanted to have it up by tonight. Think 6 gypsum screws can hold a shoplight?

My brother once had a light set up sort of like that.He used a piece of threaded rod on each side and was able to raise and lower the light by adjusting the nuts that held the light in place. Its an easy design that worked very well.
I enjoy having plants around and on top of the tank.
