A few weeks ago, at a fish auction, we purchased this mystery plant. It was labeled as water sprite, but does not look like any pictures I have seen.

Can you help us ID this plant?

Picture 1: the original plant
Picture 2: Mystery plant growing emersed, top view
Picture 3: mystery plant emersed, bottom view
Picture 4: Mystery plant submerged

As you can see it has nearly doubled to tripled in size in less than two weeks.

PS:if the water looks a little green that is because we had just spent an hour scraping the algae off every surface of the tank. We're now in the middle of a 24hr blackout.

Your plant is growing pretty good though

duckweed has a similar apperance to let's say, lilly pads, just a lot smaller.

not to get off topic, but where does duckweed come from? i got about 5 with my plants, and now i have about 750 little lily pads.

Sorry to steal your thread hungryhound

Duckweed comes from those little green things that float around your tank when you have it.

Sorry HH, no clue. I'd say post it on plantedtank.net for an ID.

c.c. duckweed grows like crazy and it spreads very fast. that stuff has become a problem in a lot lakes across the u.s.

Thanks everyone for giving it a shot.

Chrona: We'd plan on cross posting to the plantedtank, but wanted to see if anyone could ID it here first.

i'm curious to know what it is too especially if it grows that fast.

Looks like you found a good floating plant at least, lol.

Yeah. If it keeps going at its current rate, it will own the top of our tank and I can start selling it (of course once we are algae free.)

After cross posting those pictures the consensus is that the floating plant is in fact water sprite.
