As I’ve shared a few times, I getting everything I need for a 90 gallon tank I’ll be setting up sometime this fall. Gadget228 had recommended that I start looking at E-bay. For many years I’ve always ruled out E-bay for anything due to the extra shipping costs and exchange rates for us Canadians.

When our $ practically hit par with the US $, I started looking for a filter on e-bay. Well I found one. Bought a FX5 for $217 USD for a brand new one. After the minimal exchange and international shipping charges, I paid only $282.00 Canadian. I wasn’t even looking at a FX5 as I was really looking for a 405 but found out there was very little price difference.

Best deal I could find for FX5 in Canada was $348.00 from Big Als on-line if I use my points. Best price they had for a 405 was $ 270.00

It’s going to kill me to look at this box for the next few months while I build the stand and wait to save up the cash to buy the tank

Thats a killer deal!thumbs2:
I haven't seen them for under 500 at Big Al's.
With our dollar where it is Ebay is a great idea.

Thanks Northernguy. I’m really happy about having the extra filter media. My guys are real pigs and there not even close to being full grown. I’m still going to add a aqua clear 70 to the tank, but I’ll have a better pc of mind with a FX5. My LFS has them listed for 399.99 but they said they would give me a deal at 350.00. WOW !!!!

Big Als has been dropping some of there prices lately

You should check out how much they have lowered there FX5 pricing

yup just got my FX5 on e-bay 199.00 new!! I love e-bay for supplies. I used to see them for as low as 150.00 but I was in a hurry. You have to be really patient for that price. The retail price is mandated by Fluval so the only way someone can sell a brand new FX5 for the above prices is on auctions like e-bay, otherwise they risk loosing their resellers status with Fluval. Cant wait till the new fluval starts selling well then I hope FX5 will drop even further...yummy!!!

Ya, I learned that one last week getting out big 4 times. But it was fun trying to get a great deal and guessing what the other bidders were going to do.

the trick is do it during the week go and find somone who has several listed for 189.00 and no bids. Set them all to be watched in your e-bay UI. Then at the last minute before it ends just drop 10 bucks on one of the ones that hasnt been bid on at all.

That really makes sense. I'll give that a try next time

Great deal ya got there. I like Ebay, too, and generally look there before anywhere else. You always have to check those shipping charges, as you know, or can get taken to the cleaners on that sometimes. Their ads cost them whether they sell anything or not and ads are based on the price of the items so they list low to keep ad prices down then pop those shipping charges on to make up for the low price.

Yup, Unfortunantly in our hobby almost everything we buy is heavy....lol So we always get taken to the cleaners by the shipper even if the e-bayer doesn't do it...rotfl Shipping was 28.00 or so on the filter so that wasnt too bad it is a beast, I expected more for shipping.
