Diatom filter change??

When do you know its time to change the media?...... backflush the unit?......

Do you have a Vortex and what size is it? I don't have a diatom but have been reading up on the Vortex. They have a large one now that can be used continuously and a smaller one that can go from tank to tank and used for about 4 hours in each tank.

I believe I read that when water flow is slower, it needs a back flush. Good idea to do, anyway, as it will save on the motor working too hard.

im thinking mine is due because when it sits for a day or two, i can see all the crap in the jar that its actually cleaned.
Then when i start it up, it gives the water a horrible smell(really bad farts),
until it been cycled through itself for awhile. And if im seeing right, its not cleanin AS well as it should be. (mind you, it could be me)
