How much light?

In my tank if the water is left untouched after a week or so I find that the plastic plants I have develop brown patches all over them. Does this mean my filter is too dirty? Or do I have my hood light on too much?

I have a 30 gallon tank and 1 pleco to clean. I turn on my light for about 12 hrs a day?

The brown patches are probably harmless diatoms, usually common in newly set up aquariums. This doesn't have anything to do with the filter. Maybe reduce the light down to 10 hours (probably wont make a big difference though). But the diatoms will go away on their own eventually. It is also easy to rub diatoms off.

Ok thanks. My tank is pretty new a month and half old. I ended up taking them out and rinsing them when I did a water change. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything serious. I didn't notice any change in the fish so I assumed it wasn't a big deal.
