Got rid of my whisper filter and bought a bio-wheel penquin 100. For some reason the whisper struck me as a pos. Anyway, the bio-wheel is somewhat louder than the whisper. Do these things quiet down after a little while?

I also noticed an open spot to add extra media which is nice. I put in a bag of zeolite to help with ammonia.

I used bio wheels in all my tanks a long time ago. I know that mine would quiet down after I got some algea to build up on them a bit, but they only quieted about 20% for me.

it takes a while for the machine to get a "break-in" period

I removed my bio-wheels on all my filters. They are sure quiet now.

LOL I ended up doing the same thing toward the end of my first aquarium run. They were getting stuck and back flowing water, and were noisey when they were running, so I just tossed them. The fish never seemed to care.

Too noisy for me with the water splashing about, but I know some people like that sound.

Also throws water on top my glass covers. It already caused one light to not work anymore so I got rid of the rest of them. My next filters probably won't have them.

but gettin rid of em..... isnt that what those kinda filters are for??..... theIR biological presence?!?

I have the penguin 350 btw.

that extra slot, does it have to be a "cartridge" type of filter?

you can throw some ceramic rings in the extra slot instead of a cartridge

cool to know!............any other suggestions?.... do the rings have to be packaged in some manner?...... or free floating?

They just sink and stay freely in the filter. 1 ring holds as much good bacteria as the filter itself, so add 5 and you have 5X more bio filtration

A biowheel is better for growing bene. bac. the the rings though. The bacteria likes current, and air. The moving wheel provides both of those, while the rings only provide one. i wouldnt mess with the rings, because they are expensive, and IMO dont work very well. I would just stuff it with filter floss.

Oh, forgot. Your filter shouldnt be loud. I have a penguin biowheel 100 with the biowheel, and it is my quietest filter. Hmmmmm, odd.

my 350 is extremely quiet. I had LOTS of trouble with my 100 being noisy and unreliable, so i chucked it.

Definitely use ceramic rings. It most of the time quickened my cycling a few days and theyre pretty good for the cost

...what's wrong with the bioballs? Why are the rings better?

There is pretty much no differece between the two. And, really, there is no difference in efficency between either of those and filter media.
