i have a question concerning algae control. i have a 75 gallon tank with a 48 inch orbital satellite light fixture with 2 10,000 k with some blue actinac. i am starting to see some algae develop even though the tank is only 4 weeks old.
i know that algae need nutrients and light to grow. my light is on for only about 6-7 hours a day. i have read that some lights give off a certain wave length that promotes algae grow. can anyone recommend a compact light bulb that would not promote algae growth? i like using the sunpac brand.

From what I have experienced, 6,500 to 6,700K is best for a lot of plants. Anything higher, you run the risk of promoting algae growth. However, lighting is only one part of the equation, you’ll also need to look at other factors such as nitrates and phosphates just to name two. There are some really good posts in the algae sub-forum here that explain it a lot better than I can. There is a sticky wrote by Dave that is really good.

I would suggest reading that. I found it to be really good.

I hope I’ve helped

so if 6,700 is good for plants and algae is technically a plant. i assume something lower than 6700 wouldn't be good for algae?
