What would you consider your secret for keeping algal growth down?

I have a pretty cool mbuna tank but it suffers from algal growth.. ie too much too often. The rocks get dirty the glass gets dirty etc..

Do you consider your tank to be clean from algae and what do you do to keep it free (ish) from it.

Would be nice to hear how different people combat excessive algae growth.

cheers!

oops just noticed I posted in the dwarf section lol.

I have a problem of not having algae. I put hornwort and duckweed in all my tanks and have never had more than a few small short lived patches.

What kind of algae? Mbuna are algae eaters, so I would guess you're overfeeding if you're having issues in a mbuna tank.

It took me a bit, but by keeping my nitrates down and moderating the amount of light (had to cut back), my algea problem is more than under control.

I find with normal feeding, even if algea grows, mbuna may not touch it - not as a normal food source. Even at its heaviest, they would only touch it on the smoother lace rock.

I get some minimal brown now and then (scrape it clean).
Green, not an issue.

thumbs2:
