View Full Version : Why you should have too much filtration

I tend to overfilter. One reason is because I have them around. Another is because it does not hurt and the water is that much better. And theoretically you have a backup if anything goes wrong.

Well, that's exactly what happened. I did a water change on my 55 mbuna tank last Thursday (2 Whisper 60s and a Fluval 404). I had noticed some noise from the area but didn't think too much of it. Then I decided to check and see if it was the Fluval was running right. It was not running at all. Last night I cleaned it and almost got it going when it crapped out again. It is pretty good when a Fluval 404 on a 55 can stop and you not even notice it.

Another thing is that there was a small leak from the head of the filter. Either the O-ring, or the Aqua-Stop, something. Well, I wiped up what little had leaked and left the filter sitting after it crapped out. Then when I got up this morning (at 5:00 because of finals at stupid school at George Mason Incorporated) and went to turn on the lights, the carpet was wet. It was not too bad. I wiped it up and left the fan running on the carpet (area rug) that I draped over a small table to help it get some air. The tank had lost about a half an inch. It is pretty bad when you have developed a standard procedure for wet carpet.

Have you fixed your fluval yet?

yikes. my plants are my extra filtration. its also in the basement so if i get a leak, i can forget about it, as the outlet surge (contractors grade) is mounted to the center brace in the back of the stand.

My tanks all get MAJOR over filtration. Most have a canister filter now, but im trying to get the 29g a fluval 405 to combo with the biowheel 350

Good thing for that backup. You could have left the house for hours and hours and not known the fluval was down. Scary thought but you had it covered.

Thats another good thing about 2 filters, at least if one goes out you still have something.

My tanks are all in the basement, which has carpet, and the rest of the house has tile or hardwood, so no big deal for leaks.

That is the thing, it was down since I did the water change. So it was about 5 days that it was not running, asumming it was running before the water change.

You know me and how I preach about a UGF as a second filter. That's one of the reasons! ;)

UGF will just end up causing problems in the long run. I would not use them if you gave them to me.

Ditto. i just put mine in the salt tank for some reason and it would be a mess to remove it. else, its just HOB's and canisters for me
