I would like to know if a heater is required during the summer months if a home is air conditioned? If so, what is the required temperature for semi-aggresive fish?
Thanks!

I keep my heater plugged in...just in case we have a cold night...that way I have onc less thing to worry about...

...with the thermostat the heater won't come on unless the water temp. falls below your setting...

I like to keep my tropical tanks between 76-78 F...

Most fish do fine in the 75-78 degree category. You should always have the heater plugged in and set properly. It will only go on when needed and will otherwise sit idle.

my 75g stays at 78. The 10g guppy tank sits around 75.

I keep my tanks a bit higher, at 80, because it promotes good health, and ive heard it promotes better coloration.

So do I. However, a word of caution. I have had a faulty heater that would not shut off, even if I turned it all the way down which resulted in water temperature of 35 degrees C in my Malawi tank. Thank goodness no harm to them was done.

So, always keep an eye on your water temp.

I think the temp also depends on what type of fish you keep :) I keep mine at +-27 degrees celcius for my Betta

That is exactly what happened to my last set of fish. Apparently the room temp. was the same as the water temp. Given the faulty heater, the temp. rised overnight, and when I woke up in the am, all my fish were dead!! Now I am in the process of setting up the tank again with a new heater!
thanks for the advice!

My girlfriend LOVES to turn the air conditioning down at night, and I absolutely hate it!

One time, she had it down, and somehow my heater got unplugged.

I think that I lost a fish from it. I was lucky to only lose one.

Good example was me! I just woke up after having fallen asleep on the couch last night. Bedroom window was open and fan going and it was supposed to drop to 25 degrees last night. LOL I brought my potted plants in but never closed the window. duh! Glad I don't use gas to heat this place.

I kept my temps at 76-78 too except for my angel tanks which are 80.

Me too! The temp in my tank was up to 86F! Fish are real active at those temps

All my tanks are in the basement, and the basement stays at about 73F in summer and 78F in winter, so i dont have too much to worry about
