Right now, i'm cycling my 80 gallon aquarium, and today i put in another 30 pounds of my CaribSea Argamax Sand, and it's still settling, and today i bought a a few sponges, carbon insert, and a bio insert for my Aquaclear 300 (Aquaclear 70). And while i'm waiting for my sand to settle in my large aquarium, i'm running the Aquaclear 70 filter in my 25 gallon, along with my Emperor 280 filter, to try and get a good bacteria level in my filter while i wait for the sand to settle. Is it dangerous to over filter? Because right now in my 25 gallon tank, i'm having around 120 gallon rated filteration. I turned down my emperor 280 filter, and slowed the Aquaclear 70 filter, so the current is not throwing my fish around.

honestly theres no such thing as real overfiltering...... in my opinion, but is the aq70 the only filtration you have for your 80 gallon?

Right now yes. I don't plan on putting more then 1 or two fish in there until i have an idea worked out for the rest of the filtration, i was thinking of going with a canister filter, and the aquaclear 70.

I wasn't in a rush to put that many fish in this tank anyways. What kind of canister would you recommend? I've seen a few on the local classifieds, Fluval FX5 or something like that. Or should i get an Emperor 400 filter along with my AquaClear 70? I have an emperor 280 on my 20 gallon and it does an excellent job. I really like the filter.

I would definitely get a Fluval FX5. I have two Fluval 405s on my 75 and I plan on getting an FX5 to replace them. For the price you can't match the FX5 and you will never have to think about having enough filtration ever again.

If I remember correctly you were planning to take everything from your 20 and move it to the 80 when that tank was ready. The aqua clear 70 should give you around 150GPH flow rate with the media and a bit of wear and from what I’ve read the emperor 280 should give you about the same GPH flow rate. That would work really well for an 80 gallon tank, allowing for a little bit of a heavy bioload.

Excellent idea cycling the filters on your 20 gallon tank. I took the same approach with my 36 gallon tank and it worked really well. As long as the flow doesn’t both your fish, you don’t need to worry. If you think it is bothering your fish, there are DIY flow diverters posted here that will help. I would leave your filters on the 20 gallon for least 4 to 5 weeks to allow a good amount of BB in the filter.

I also agree with fishguy2727, a FX5 would be a outstanding filter if you have the $$$ for it

I was actually planning on moving just the 6 neons i have to the 80 gallon, because they mistake the angels long thin belly fins, the two feelers, for food, and they often nibble at it during feeding. So, i was going to take them out and put them in the 80 gallon when they're ready. I like those FX5's, but the cheapest i can find them are around $280. I think thats out of my price range.

The saying is you can not have too much filtration. But you can have too much water flow. It does not sound like that will be a problem.

You can not have to much filtration, but there comes point where excessive is an economic waste.

You should be able to find the FX5 online for $200-250 shipped.

That's pretty tough to do in Canada where everything like that is imported. Around $300.00 (give or take) is about the best deal you can find for a FX5 iether locally or ordering on line from big als on-line or companies like that.

I've been watching filter prices for a few months now trying to get the best deal that I can for my next tank.

What do you guys think about making home made filters? Maybe a sump of some sort, have the water siphoning out of the tank, and just have one return pump to the tank.

Isn't Hagen based in Canada? I know they have their own trucks up there as opposed to down here where they only use FedEx (or UPS). So that shouldn't be an issue.

You can't match the mechanical filtration from a canisters, which is important in freshwater. I would only use a sump on a saltwater tank or a HUGE freshwater tank.

Well I'll be, you are correct. Hagen has it's international head office in Montreal. I just assumed ther are a US based company as most of there porducts I buy state made in USA or some other country whuch can drive up prices a little.
