Can snails go with Cichlids? I was thinking about gettings some to feed them because from what I hear they like to eat them. Is this true? Could the continue to reproduce in the tank if I hatch them first? Should I just put the eggs right in? I need some info on Snails and Cichlids. Can anyone help?

Depends on what Lake Malawi cichlids you have. Mbunas are algivores so do not need any high protein sutff like that. And the others should all eat prepared foods without complaining and I personally will not feed live at all if they will eat prepared. All my cichlids get nothing but NLS.

Currently I have peacocks in there. I was just hoping to have something else in there that would enjoy the sand substrate that I have worked so hard to put in. I also would like for them to feel like they are in their natural enviorment....

I think the only good tankmates for peacocks are other peacocks and certain Synodontis spp. I have a S. petricola in my 150 peacock tank. There are a few other species that could work.

synodontis multipunctatus is a malawi catfish that would like the sand substrate and will go well with peacocks.

also I'm surprised by how much I see of mine during the daytime.

they used to be a bit spendy but there are more captive bred specimens around nowadays I gather. if you can get wild caught they have a beautiful greenish tinge to their colouring.

Synodontis multipuntatus is from Lake Tanganyika. The only Synodontis from Lake Malawi is S. njassae. S. multipunctatus, S. petricola, and S. njassae should all do well in a Lake Malawi tank. Some may also include S. eupterus in that list.

I just added 4 sunshine peacocks in with my crazy bunch of cichlids and they are all happy as can be.

As far as snails???
I hear of many people putting apple snails in with cichlids and they do fine.

How much were your snails? Will they reproduce?

3$ each, and they will breed.

So far, the 2 in the 33g severum are still alive, and the 2 in the 29g african tank are still alive, none of the fish show much interest with them.

I wouldn't put snails with cichlids. I had a fairly large apple snail in my African tank, and within 2 days they had eaten off both of the snails tentacles. The snail died not long after that.

My Malawi's ignore snails in my tank. Never had an issue.
