View Full Version : OMG gross Marineland canister

I don't crack open my canister filter very often because it's filled with only bio-media but it dawned on me yesterday I haven't checked it longer than is prudent. When I opened the filter the bio-media was surrounded by and the filter drawers full of this greying gunk. I took the whole thing apart and rinsed it all thoroughly pouring gallons of distilled water over it.

Gee I wondered where my waterflow had gone.

It's amazing how dirty it gets in there. And even dirtier if you have planted tank substrate. I clean mine out about every 4-6 weeks but I've actually heard of some who hasn't cleaned theirs in a year. Gulp!

They do get dirty, I tend to go 2-3 months so mine are pretty ugly when I open them.

Well, one always runs the risk of damaging the 'good' bacteria, if you're like me and the only thing you have in your canister is bio-media then there's no need to clean it too frequently especially if you have a sponge on the intake nozzle.
