View Full Version : Keeping Kribs with Bottom Dwellers

I currently have 4 cory cats in an aquarium with a pair of Kribs and
numerous tiger barbs. The kribs are constantly nipping the corys causing top
fin damage. I want to remove the corys and replace them with another
bottom feeder fish. The corys do an excellent job cleaning up excess food
that falls to the bottom. Any suggestions for a replacement?

What size is your tank? The pair of kribs will occupy the bottom area of your tank and will not welcome anyone else, especially if they are mating.

If the kribs are picking on the cories they will most likely pick on any other bottom dweller you put in the tank.

Kribs will claim the bottom unless you have a large area or a tougher fish.
I have a mixed african cichlid tank with kribs and a german peacock.
The kribs have their half as the peacock built a nest and booted them out of the "his" area.
I had to remove all my other bottom dwellers except my Synodontis (1 left) and they "respect" each other.
Recommend you do the kribs in one setup and keep the others.

Mid-size loaches would stand up to the krib's well enough. Swap out the cory cats for 3-5 yoyo's or skunk loaches.

The tank is a 30 gal long tank. I'm pretty sure the Kribs are about to mate
and this is causing the increased aggression. Don't most loaches get pretty
big?

Not really, yoyo's and skunk loaches don't grow any larger than krib's.

Out of curiosity, would a single krib show the same kind of territoriality ... or is it mostly because there's a pair?

I've kept a single male krib in a 30 gal. tank with tiger barbs and corys. Still had problems with aggression, but it differs from fish to fish. I've also had other males with less problems. Breeding pairs have always caused me the most stress, usually harassing anything that comes near them.

I had to rehome some corys because a single female krib kept harassing them.

I'm still researching the whole idea of tropicals, but I found young Kribs are available at a second LFS, which has perked my interest in them!
Given I plan to get a 55g tank (probably a Jewel Rio 240), does anyone care to comment on whether I am "playing with fire" with my current ideas on this community mix:-

I've never had this problem before. I have a single female krib and a cory and she has yet to show any aggression towards my cory at all.

I had a mated pair of Kribs in a 100 gallon tank once, when they spawned all the other fish stayed on the other end of the tank - and it was very heavily planted....but the kribs still managed to intimidate the other fish. I'm thinking a 30 gallon is going to be too small if they spawn! Both the male and female protect the fry, and boy they take the job seriously lol!
