I HAVE TWO QUETZAL CICHLIDS in a 3 foot tank tank runs on an external fillter with a u.v fillter as well had fish for approx 3 months
a couple of days after putting in tank both fish dissplayed wite spot
after water changes and treating white spot cleared up however one of the fish will suddenly start to shake then goes crazy swimming round tank and jumping out of water
the poor thing then returnes to normal.
both feed well varied diet have tried everything aquarium salt tonics regular water checks both with my own kit and at a reputible fish store
and everything is ok
neither fish bother each other so dont think it is a bulliying problem as has been reported in these fish.
any body got any idease thank you

Sounds to me like it has external parasites. This behavior is a result of the fish trying to scratch itself and to get away from the parasites that are bothering it.

The most common parasitic disease is Ich; look for white spots on the body (you said you saw some, but didn't treat with meds, so it could be back) that look like salt. If no spots are visible, shine a flashlight on the fish to look for rust-like spots and flecks. This would be velvet, another common and treatable disease. If that search turns up nothing, check the gills for small, thread-like worms called gill flukes or other worm-like parasites elsewhere on the body and treat with an external parasite medicine like Jungle Labs' Parasite Clear.

Sorry I can't be much help - it's too early in the morning for my brain to be on.
