Nice setup, clean look to the tank. How are you doing the filtering? How about a side shot of one of the dividers too!

No filtering.... I'm not sure how to do this regarding cycling or filtering.... I'll have to do some homework.

Maybe a small sponge filter at the back of each box. You can run them off one air pump. They sell these small sponge cartridge filters for betta tanks, I think 3 of those would work well, small and compact. Or maybe if the dividers have holes in them, you could get a small mini canister, like a zoo med 501, put the intake at one side and outtake on the other side. Very low flow, so should be fine for the betta.

^^ I agree. Should have cycled some small sponge filters for a month or so. It's never to late to start though.. nice setup there!

It looks good but in reality not sure how it will work. They will be constantly wanting to fight and flaring at one another I'm afraid and being in an uncycled tank will not work for these guys. Why didn't you figure out your filtering before you got them? (Hobbs runs for her wooden spoon.)

I guess I didn't think that they needed filtration because they seem to stay alive in those cups forever and all that they have is a little hole at the top.

As far as them flaring....again I figured since in the stores they're stacked next to each other that they'd be used to it. I suspect they'll be ok for a while until I can figure out how to improve their living conditions.

They're eating at least....probably the first time they've eaten in a while...though they do appear to be in good health.....externally anyway.

...after thought, their flaring actually isn't an issue. Even if there wasn't other fish next to them....they still flare at their reflections in the glass. So I'm not gonna worry if they flare at each other.... unless someone can tell me how to stop them from seeing their reflections.

I only have one that I bought during the week and he has only flared once and it wasn't at his own reflection. Instead it was at my son who was teasing him with a finger. He has since gotten past that and doesn't care about fingers.

I agree that the tank should have been cycled and while they don't like alot of water movement, there should be some type of filtration installed. I'm running 2 AC 30's on a 20 long.

As for the flaring, tall plants either fake or real should help. They don't destroy plants, so with some creative planting they should be okay. Also if you can get your hands on some moss, give each of them some of that as Betta's like to rub and hide in it.

Nice bettas Mith! What size tank is that? I like the set up but I would add small sponge filters to each segment. Can water pass from one end to the other or did you silicone the glass barriers in?

Mith

All 3 of these Betas flare at their reflections....

I'm going to look for some type of bubble powered filtration (hopefully small enough for each section). Can't do HOB because there isn't enough room AND even though water can pass from sections, I'd rather have each section have its own filtration.

air pump, gangvalve and 3 sponge filters would do.

You could use moss walls to break their LOS

The tank looks great, hopefully you get it working practically soon. Doh!

You could rig yup a small canister style filter to drop filtered wather into the tops...Its doible just depends on how much work youw ant to put ino the tank. I've kept betta alive in non cycled, no filtered tanks when I was 10. Had them for years in small 5gs tanks. It can be done, NOT BEST. But it can be done. Don't forget to heat the tank to as bettas like about 78 as their temp.

Hmmm.....ideally since the compartments aren't water toght, if I could have an intake in one end and an exhaust in the other the whole tank would be equally filtered.

Do they even make canisteres small enough to accommodate a 5g tank??

I got a temp solution today. I found the cutest little air powered filters with charcoal and sponge. PROBLEM is....and I didn't realize this when I bought them, is that they're DISPOSABLE! What the hell good is a disposable filter?? It would NEVER cycle the tank?????????

Anywho, what I decided was that I'll fugure out a way to remove the GLUED on lid and then figure out to reattach it. Maybe I can use my dremel tool or something. I'll figure it out.

I got a 3 way valve adjustment thing so I can regulate exactly how much air goes to each filter. I bought a "whisper" air pump 40 so it should be able to blow them out of the water in the event that I choose to invoke my God-like powers LOL.

So a solution is on the way!

Oh, the fish guy was telling me that emperer tetras are delicate fish (NOT good to cycle with). Anyone confirm this?

Those are some nice pictures thumbs2: . I can never get mine to look like that, what's your secret? I really like the look of the dark background and how the plants stick out, and the pictures of the fish themselves are really cool. Good choice on the bettas. Good luck on the filtration situation; I'm sure the set up they're in now is a major improvement from what they were living in, so any improvement is good in my book.

Well, is each sectioon of the tank 5gs' I was thinking of making small overflow style of bows into the tank to run down into a canister, just rig the tubing up with connectors, then have a single return line with an altered waterfall. Like my filters been cut back with plastic, so intead of dumping the water into one spot, it dispeses into two. Just rige a set up?

Its makes ore sense in my head :/

They do make sure canister filters. Tom rapids mini canister filter, as well as the zoo med 501. I think the tom rapids one is cheaper, around $15-20. I would probably just put intake on one end and outtake on the other end, one filter for the whole tank, drill a few holes in the dividers. That way you can also just use 1 heater for the whole tank. I have both of these canister filters, the zoo med is a lot quiter, I can only hear it running if I put my ear right up to it. Very low flow.

There's really no secret. I take a LOT of pictures before I get some I like. It's just trial and error. When I got the camera (Canon Rebel, XSI 45d) I knew nothing about cameras (to speak of). I just played with the settings and learned how they worked by trial and error. Of course, the camera itself is probably more important than anything LOL. I used to have a Canon Elf 100 and although it was a great little camera, it didn't have a manuel focus with is CRITICAL to getting pictures of fish.

Re the fishies living conditions... HELL YEA it's better than they had... LOL. Poor little guys. Once I get my filtration resolved (and heating) they're going to have a great life. I could do the mini canister thing. If I put the intake on one end of the tank and the exhaust at the other, the water can easily pass from one seciton to the next. So we'll see how that goes.

I have a temperary fix for the time being.

I'm not really sure what you mean, but the area I have to work with is very limited seeing as how the tank itself is sitting on a shelf. As I said above, I could to a canister with the intake on one end and the exhaust on the other...

Well, no tetras are not a good choice for cycling imo, but they arent any more sensitive than other tetras as far as I know. Smaller tetras are usually more sensitive than the larger ones. Rummynose tetras are pretty sensitive, and so are neons these days. Hes just talking to talk I think

My girlfriend actually has a Canon Rebel XS that I've been using to take pictures. I normally turn the dial to the "P" whatever that is lol. I also max out the ISO to 1600. Other than that, I haven't really touched any other settings, other than switching to manual focus when necessary, as I really don't know what any of it means. What settings have you found to work best for you?

Sorry for the late reply... the tank's doing well. The filtration system's great. I have a small filtered powerhead in one section and a spray bar that extents through each section (had a hole cut in each glass partition for it to pass through) and since each section's NOT water tight, the water easily passes from section to section.

The lights (LED) aren't that great for the Java Moss, though it's still alive and seems to be healthy. Other than this, nothing new to report. They seem happy and healthy! thumbs2:

Thanks. The filter system seems to work well. I get a LOT of pass-through filtration with each section of the tank (three of them) because the seperation partitions are not water tight. This allows the water (one hole per section) to pass back to the filter and keep the water cycled.

The filter is just enough to keep the flow adequate IMO...

No problems with the betas, all are still fat and "happy" as far as I can see. thumbs2:

Well, they're still alive... LOL. The setup's not really complicated. The tank has two glass partitions dividing the tank into three living quarters. There's a spray bar that extends though each hole in each partition (holes cut by the local glass company) and each partition has one hole cut into it where the spray bar passes. This seems to alot enough circulation where as the water flows from the furthest partition back to the partition where the filter is.

My lighting is LED so that's not the "ideal" lighting for plants. I'm tryingn to grow Java plant which is "supposedly" easy to grow in low lighting.

So far so good....

I have recently noticed "Planeria" so I'm cutting back on the feeding... but other than that, the fish and tank seem to be doing fine. :22:
