Freshwater? All I know is this info is for a freshwater kind. Didn't say the species name.
Don't let the PH drop under 6.5
Will eat anything they can find on the bottom.
Depending on species can be about 7 centimetres. That's like 2-3 inches, isn't it?
12-25oC - Coldwater to Sub-tropical if you convert it to F if I recall correctly.
All I could find. And only found it due to a spelling error I made.
Everything else was "Take care not to overcook them!"
Do you know what species they are?

'Prawn' is a broad term. Do you know the species or have a photo?
No clue, its clear body with some little stripes on its "back".

Its a shame they didn't give you the name. I've only dealt with larger food prawns in aquaculture, and they are some vicious creatures. Like Void said, they will eat anything, including killing and eating their own kind and killing fish. Of course, these guys were 6-10 inches from rostrum to tail fan. So hopefully you have a smaller species.. good luck! Hopefully we'll get to see some pics soon.
I am tempted to put it in with my oscar and hope for the best. (this is the oscar that lives with guppies LOL) Right now they are in a line 40gal with some zebra danios waiting to be stocked. Thanks uncle willie :)

Here comes the dumb question. I thought prawns were shrimp is all? I've read often of people putting prawns in a bag for cycling their tank.

My LFS has prawns in their planted Bow tank. I asked about them once and was told that they grow to be about a foot and they're diggers.
No idea what species they are...

:18: Holy carp, Red. If those are in fact the prawn species you've been given I have officially fallen in love. :18:
And to Hobbs, so far as I can find, the main differences between Prawns and Shrimps are their gill and leg structure. Seems small, but apparently differentiated their evolutionary path. (Answer doesn't work for everyone, but if we're talking differences, can't do much more than use Man's explanation regarding species.)

From your picture it looks like it might be macrobrachium rosenbergii . I'm by no means an expert so if this is unwelcome news don't be too alarmed, but the picture you posted looks very much like one in its juvenile form . I've seen them sold in stores as Giant Blue Prawn or Long-Armed Prawn . Does it have very small delicate claws right now like a shrimp, and not beefy claws like a crayfish ?
If in fact that's what it is, beware . :ssuprised: They get super big and super mean . I had one that started off very petite and looked like a big ghost shrimp and ended up having a 29g tank to himself after growing huge and killing off all the fish in the tank . As they grow into adults they change forms during certain molts and they end up with very long antenna and super long claws .
I think females will not develop the super-long blue claws that males eventually get, but they'll still be giant and aggressive and not really suitable to house with anything else . Still an awesome and active specimen to keep if you can accommodate it . :shappy:

Some pictures of the size potential of adult males to give you an idea of the challenges . But I could be wrong !
