I've just got a new tank and am planning on moving my 2 firemouths into it, any suggestions on good tankmates?

I have a Jack Dempsey living with my Firemouth in a 55 gal. along with a pleco and they get along fine except one day the Dempsey was in a bad mood and removed some of the Firemouth's tail fin. Pound for pound the Firemouth is meaner than the Dempsey. He sometimes picks on the Pleco.

Cryptoheros sajica
Cryptoheros spilurum
Herotilapia multispinosa

Similar sizes, similar temperament.

And of course similar water parametres.

i am a novice at fire mouths as i have never had them i have got other ciclids but i want to try a new one. so is a 3ft tank going to be big enough? also do fire mouths do well on their own or have companions, i thought maybe a pair.

You could do a M/F pair in a 30G, tankmates depends on just low large of a 3ft tank you have. How many gallons is it?

any of the geophagus species would do well with your firemouths...

Firemouths can go fine in a 30 gallon. Tankmates can range anywhere from tetras to Jack Dempseys. It's really up to you in what you want to do.

I have two blood parrots and two firemouths. Do you think I can keep a male betta in with these four or not. Maybe give it a try and see how they respond to each other. Help and thanks in advance.

Also I think the betta will just get the crap kicked out of him. But thats my thoughts. What are the temperments of your fish?

All four are around 2 to 2.5 inches. I would assume they are quite young. Temperment i notice that the firemouths chase each other around just as much as the blood parrot chase each other around. I don't see any nipping but if one or another comes by they will chase it out of the area.

i just added two small firemouths to my community (3 bala sharks, 10 tiger barbs, 1 rainbow shark) in a 55 gallon tank.

they just swim around everywhere and don't bother a thing. i thought they might go to the bottom and find territory. i even arranged my slate rock to make them little caves. but they are just swimming around all over the tank minding their own business, not bothering any of the other fish or eachother.

Firemouths are a very mild cichlid and normally only bother with each other. I kept mine with larger community fish like gourami's and platies.

I have a firemouth in with six Angles in a 55 gal and they do fine. I had to remove him from a 30 gal with two other firemouth when they had frys.
