A lot of invertebrates need calcium supplements to maintain a healthy shell or carapace.

My fish keep trying to eat what I put in, though. I imagine a little wouldn't hurt them, but actually ingesting large quantities could.

But I figure if I put it directly into the filter and let it dissolve it should still get lots of calcium into the water, but with less actually nommage by the fish, right?

Or if I have things completely carp-backwards, feel free to explain something new to me.

What are you putting in for calcium? I have tryed cuttlebones but they get kinda funky. Shells desolve quickly in my water. I know that a lot of snail keepers use human calcium pills. They just put a pill in and let it desolve and the snails eat it. I use some liquid calcium just becuase I have it.

Old crushed shells primarily.

You could just put them in the filter if you want.

Yup, you can use anything like that as media is you so wish. People put crushed coral, peat and other ph altering materials in the filter with just that in mind. Its best to bag it.

It is okay and a good thing for them to eat stuff with calcium

Thanks WT & Anna.
And I do have some of the more finely crushed stuff actually mixed into the food.
Was just worried when the tetras started trying to eat like big sharp pieces of it.
(Tore the mesh bag open to get at it, even! Like, really, wth? =\)

Ah well. Into the filter it goes!
