Total fish newbie here. We just got a red-cap oranda for my son last week. He named him Frenzy because that's what he was like at the pet store when he picked him out.
I did not even know he was a fancy until I browsed the web after we got home from the pet store.
Anyways, after reading about the upkeep involved I was a little intimidated. Our son has fast grown attached to Frenzy and I really want him to thrive.
So, it's been 12 days and the little guy is doing well, although the ammonia tested at .75 ppm yesterday. I assume the tank is in some phase of nitrogen cycling and that number may fluctuate either up or down. pH is 7.8 and 0 ppm for both nitrite and nitrate. The tank is 10 gallons with a filter and but no heater.
We are all excited with our new pet and I am excited to be in this forum. I look forward to participating and learning along the way.
Cheers!
