A 10g tank can be very limiting due to it's size, so I would go for colorful, small fish. Platies would be a good choice, they are cheap, hardy and very colourful, you could easily add 8 in there. Guppies would be another good choice. To that, add a Chinese Algae eater or cory for the bottom and you're good to go.

If you redid it by changing out the gravel, you'll need to cycle it first before adding fish. But small colorful would be my choice, as well. Neon's and rasbora's or two of my favorites.

For sure dont do bottom feeders. They would have a hard time working those large gravel pieces for food.

try-

5 cardinal tetras
3 platys
3 neon tetras

Try to keep it understocked. A dwarf gourami and a small school (5-6) of rasboras or cardinal/neon tetras would look cool.

I had one of the cobalt blue dwarf gouramies and a small scholl of neons in a 10 for a long time - they really looked/played nice together.

are gold barbs too big for a 10 gallon? I really love their color.

Gold Barbs like to school, and they get to be bigger than cardinal/neons, etc. Furthermore, barbs in general are pretty feisty, and you may see some aggressive behaviour in a small tank like a 10g. You could give it a shot though.

how many gold barbs would you recommend?

how many gold barbs would you recommend?

Perhaps 4-5 by themselves. Ideally you would get 6+, but the tank won't allow for it.

Perhaps 4-5. Ideally you would get 6+ (or a larger tank, as they are very active), but the tank won't allow for it.
