Today was the Easter Iowa Aquarium Associations biannual fish and aquarium auction. The wife and I drove the 30 minutes up to Cedar Rapids to see what all the fuss was about.

In the first couple lots we seriously began to wonder if we could afford to stick around! Their was a 60lb piece of Texas Holy rock (I think that was what it was called) that went for $115!

We are glad we stuck around though as the prices became amazing! If we had a cichlilid tank we would have been in heaven as they routinely sold for ~$1 a fish! Their were even a couple 10-12 inch oscars that sold for under $5 each, however, the steal of the show was a silver arrawana (~14in) that went for $24 (that was only because the seller either wanted his $24 dollar tub back or the price of the tub covered-the actual price of the fish was $2).

I think we did okay. We might have paid too much for a 20g long and stand that we got for $38. It looks like I finally have my shrimp tank. We also picked up some water sprite (Ceratopteris Thalicroides) or at least that's what the bag said, however, we have our doubts and if you could ID the plant from the picture it would be much appreciated.

We also made out like a bandit on two finds. Yesterday I realized that their were legs available for my light and was going to spend $14 to have them shipped. I managed to get them today for $1, but this wasn't even our best find! My wife was able to get 3 Pearl Gouramis for $3! They're are gorgeous fish and it looks like we should have at least one female, so fry could be on the way.

We are overly excited and beside ourselves and had to share our experience! You cna bet come fall we'll be going back, hopefully with some of our own goodies to sell!

Once again, any help in identifying this plant would be much appreciated.

No idea what it is, but it looks good, that is the sort of thing I am after, is it a groundcover?

I have no clue what they are, but sure do look nice. Any idea what kind of shrimp your going to be buying?

Leaf shape looks similar to watersprite, but I guess you'll have to wait to see how it grows. I don't have any experience with the stuff, so I'm just going off of pictures.

I am not sure what it is, but I don't think that it is a ground cover. It appears to be a floating plant. I love how it looks, and am going to keep it floating to see if it keeps its shape and appearance. I am afraid that if it is watersprite and I plant it in the substrate it will look like this:
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

which doesn't look bad but I love the form of the plant in its current state.

I am not sure yet. I think that I am going to either get the crystal red shrimp or cherry shrimp. I have not decided, I have a lot of planning to do before I get around to purchasing them. I need to figure out a shrimp safe filter and Get a light that fits a 30" long tank as well as plant the thing.

That is what I am doing too, going off pictures. It may be a water sprite, but man is the floating version completely different from the submerged version.

On a semi related note I think that we answered one of the questions that has been asked from time to time on this board. Can you mix regular adn dwarf gourami's.

Our resouding answer is no. Our one lone dwarf flame who survived the mysterious mini cycles taht we were having decided that the tank was his and would not leave the pearls alone. We heard a thunk as one of the tried to jump out of the tank and hit the glass cover and decided that we had to end that experiment. I did not want to stress out the pearls any more than they already were from transit to the auction and finding a new home so he was removed.

He is temporarily being housed in our 5 gallon betta tank and grant the betta is living in our water change bucket until we can decide what we are going to do. Stupid Labrynth fish.

Heh, that's odd. Usually it's the other way around. Perhaps the flame gourami is just being protective of his territory since he's been "king of the tank" for a while.

I think that is exactly what it is. I let them go for a little while hoping the bigger pearls would put him in his place (they are 3inches long to his one inch), but when the pearls started trying to jump out of the tank to avoid him I knew something had to be done.
