Hello, everyone! Just wanted to say thanks for all of your great questions and answers. I'm adopting a betta (male) from a friend suffering from MTS. I believe they have it in a 2.5 gallon, but I don't know anything about the filtration/heat/light situation. Reading your great ideas here has prepared me for what I will do for the little guy once he arrives. I definitely want to get him a sponge filter, a plant (possibly java fern) and one of those moss balls I've read about. I hope the tank has a light (I think my friends said it does) and now I know I need a little heater too if it doesn't. So, thanks again, and I'll post pictures of the little man when I get him on Monday.

Well you're doing all the right things, reading up and learning before you get the betta. I think petsmart sells a small box sponge filter that suction cups to the side of the tank. For a 2.5g, a desk lamp could work. A lid would be good too, bettas are known to jump.
