I decided I can't stand the look of fake plants anymore so I am attempting a planted tank with my plant destroying nics. Right now most of the plants are anubias since the fish dig up anything rooted. I'm working on a way to rig rooted plants down since I'd love to have giant vals spanning the back of the tank.

Before (was hating this tank with the silk plants):

I couldn't post the updated pic from March because the tank was entered into the TOTM competition. Here's what it looked like a month ago:

The awesome sword I added:

Today I decided I had to redo the tank and remove as much of the petrified wood as I could because the fish are getting too big and needed more swimming room. They're getting scraped up on the rocks as they try to swim by and when they squabble. I'm not as happy with it as I was before, but for the sake of the fish I removed all but one piece of the petrified wood. Also removed one of the cool pieces of driftwood that refused to sink as I would have needed to keep more rocks in to weigh it down. Hopefully the fish will stop getting scraped up, the wood is not abrasive so hopefully it won't mark them up.

New aquascape. In this pic you can see just how big the nics have gotten and why I had to remove a lot of the hardscape:

My big guy (well, most of the others are now as big as he is):

For size comparison, one of the others next to the big guy when I first got them:

Pictus cat. These guys have all hit the 4-5" mark and are hopefully done growing:

Beautiful tank!

What type of sword is that? I'm kinda looking at getting rid of my sags and want something to fill that corner. That type of sword would look great.

Love it Lab Rat-it was great before you switched to live plants, and after they all grew in you made it look absolutely beautiful.

I could easily zone out staring at your tank for a looong time.

Well done. thumbs2:

Had to pull all of the petrified wood out of the tank since the nics are getting too big and getting scraped up on it. Probably will have to rehome some of them soon as they're starting to get some shredded fins. Also removed the centerpiece of driftwood since the damn thing would not stay sunk. I'll have to anchor it to slate eventually, it's a nice piece.

Freed up quite a bit of room for them, they have really grown lately. Your rosies have some nice color to them as well!

Thanks guys! It did open up a bit of room but the fish are growing so freaking fast. I wish the EBJD would grow half as fast as those nics do.

Sad day today...traded in 4 of my nics to the LFS. The biggest male has been digging a big pit and rearranging all of the plants to his liking. Seems like he finally picked a female (the smallest but prettiest one) and started beating the crap out of everyone else. The entire left side of the tank was his and his alone, except for his gf. Today I decided it would be best to trade the others in. The bioload on that tank was starting to get too high as well.

I did end up getting a small green severum (they didn't have the rotkeil severums unfortunately) and a small, hopefully female, salvini. Picked up a couple more pounds of live rock as well, and still left the lfs with $4 in change from the trade in. I may add another cichlid or two if I figure out something compatible. Will post pics of the new guys later, right now they're hiding in the plants.

Looking good! Shame about the driftwood/nics not working out. Good luck getting it mounted!

The driftwood that is...

Got some new pics of the fish today. Trying to not use a flash, and it makes for a difficult time getting clear pics, but the colors are truer. I moved my 2 SAE from the 29g (they've outgrown it) into the 75g. Hopefully they'll put a dent in the algae and enjoy the extra swimming room. Also picked up a rotkeil severum today. He's itty bitty still, sevs at that size are quite cute.

Tank is now torn down. Look for a reincarnation as a Jaguar cichlid tank in the next couple of weeks.
