View Full Version : Jager heater can't seem to keep temperature right

I recently bought a Jager 125w heater for my tank. The store I bought it from said to let it sit in my tank for about 30 minutes before I turned it on for the thermometer to adjust to the temperature of the tank. After 30 minutes I set the temperature I wanted and turned it on. By the next morning I noticed the heater was not keeping the tank at the correct temperature, it was too low, so I decided to do what the instructions said and calibrate it, I unplugged it, I took the temperate reading from my manual thermometer I already had in the tank, pulled up the calibration button and set it to that temperature, plugged it back in, and then set the temperature gauge to what I wanted. I checked it again later and the tank was way hotter than what I set. I have tried calibrating it 3 times since, but now it just seems to always stay on. I have been trying to control the temperature with it manually in the meantime. Anyone have any suggestions? Do I have a bad heater, or am I just not using it correctly.

I have never used that brand. But if it is always on I would take it back and get another heater. I never go on the temps they have on the heaters. I set the heater and if I need the temp higher I turn the heater up a little bit, if too high I just lower it.

I would just wing it.

If its too hot, turn it down. Too cold, turn it up.

Or trade it in.

What size tank is it and what is the ambient room temp where the tank is?

30 Gallons, right now probably on average between 65-70 depending on the time of day.

That certainly does sound like a defective heater to me. Jager heaters are one of the most reliable and best built heaters on the market and will keep the tank quite steady. I currently have a pair of Jagers running in my 125 and they hold it steady all the time.

I agree the heater might be bad. I would get a replacement heater maybe a 150 watt if thats doable. The ambient room temp is roughly 8-20 deg cooler than what you want the water at (78 deg right?). I have a 200 watt in my 55 and it only does a fair job but it does work and the ambient room temp falls to about 68-70 deg at night.

I had this same problem with both of my Jager heaters, the trick to get it to work right is when you change the temperature setting to turn the dial several degree's past where you want it then back to the correct temperature. Since I started doing it this way they both have worked fine.

Thanks, I was able to get it working by doing the same thing, even though its "calibrated" it's set to 67 right now, but keeping the temperature at a perfect 78.

I would go ahead and recalibrate it one last time just so the dial matches the temperature.

Glad it worked for you. thumbs2:
