View Full Version : What are your other hobbies?
Okay, so I got started what I think was/is a great thread about occupations. So now the question is, when you aren't taking care of your fish or working, what do you do with your spare time? I'll go first...
1. Play with my daughter.
2. Did I mention I love to play with my daughter?
3. Spend time with my family (wife/daughter).
4. Play games on the computer (I'm a computer geek, build my own machines--if anyone ever needs help with a computer, pm me and I'll give a helping hand).
5. Listen to music. Okay, this is actually a constant in addition to the above.
6. Watch movies.
7. Gardening/landscaping/home improvement.
Your turn!
I do lots of things I suppose:
1. I have 3 kids, 17, 15 and 12...all busy with various activities...so I'm a chauffer and a spectator...er, and a fundraiser...
2. I LUV my birds...my parrots especially, but also my finches...and they keep me quite busy...
3. I have 4 dogs...2 seniors and 2 one-year-old dogs...
4. We have an acerage...haven't done much with the horses yet this season...but will be heading out to the barn more often shortly...
5. Play the violin...in a community orchestra
6. Haven't done much lately...but I have a background in fine art as well...
7. Some gardening and yard stuff...more flowers than veggies though...
8. Normally I spend my down-time reading or watching TV...but lately it's been all on-line as I gather info. on aquariums...and on my birds too...

3) Painting (pastels)
4) RC cars :)

7) Most things geeky that an engineering major would find fascinating.

Chrona, I challenge you to a ping-pong off! Too bad you're all the way in connecticut. And you'd probably win anyway.
1.Listening to music (Chemical brothers rule!)
2.Taking care of my box turtle.
3. Hanging out here
4.Fixing computers.

At the moment, Guitar Hero II on Hard and Expert settings. (I skipped Easy and Medium on my login.) Hey! It's the only game I'm better than he is!
Websurfing for some ideas on how to get my fish in prestine condition... in some ways they looks so great... but I always have little problems that don't go away no matter what I try. :( Unfortunately, no forums really seem to have much to say other than the usual.
Wow, I guess I should add that I am a drummer, but Drumachine already knows that. Chrona, I'm an RC car fiend too! Wondering what you have? Cool! My favorite vehicle now is a heavily modified Stampede, or the Savage SS, or...well, I have quite a few vehicles now.
Also love spending time with my 3 dogs, 5 cats, 1 hampster!

Used to do tons of stuff before I had to give it up but I bowled about 3 times a week and went all over FL to bowl in tournaments. My house was the "party spot" so all the big parties, hog roasts, deep-fried turkey cook-outs were at my place. I love cooking for big crowds. Also had poker games, etc.
I gardened lots and had imported orchids and unusally plants in my yard......everywhere.
Today it's just the fish and sitting on the computer pretty much.
Aliz, I'm a red wine/fine beer guy also. Port on occasion.

I haven't heard of Dogfish before, I'm assuming they are a local microbrew?
Personally, my beer tastes/preferences goes by season. For example, spring/summer I prefer lighter beers such as pale ales and hefeweißens (and if anyone ever puts a wedge of lemon anywhere near my hefeweißen, I'll report you to the Barvarian authorities and and you charged with messing up their national drink ... :ezpi_wink1: )
In the fall/winter I prefer darker beers such as porter/stouts. A really good porter for example is the Cannery Blackberry Porter which is a local microbrew (from Pentiction, I believe).
There are some other ales and porters that come out of Quebec that are really good, quite pricey, but damn fine. I'll get the name for you sometime and IM it to you.

I do so much crap that I had to give a bunch of it up when the baby came. Heck, I had to give up some of it after I was married.
1. Computer Stuff (Building, networking, gaming, etc.) I do a lot less of this.
2. Amateur Radio (Ham), SW listening, and CB. I'm inactive right now, but still have most of my modest equipment. I never did finish learning Morse Code. At this point, I don't think I'll ever really be really active in it again. It's quite expensive, and antenna's are too prohibited in todays subdivisions. It's also time consuming and the wife doesn't really like it.
3. Gardening/Home Improvement/minor auto repair and maintenance: My newest and most prolific hobby since getting married and becoming a first time homeowner. At least the wife supports this one.
4. Target shooting/Skeet/Archery. Another hobby that's on hold.
5. Building Models and model rocketry. Mostly done with kids, but one's too young and anothers too old right now.
6. RC cars and boats. I quit this one.
7. Hobby circuit building and electronics. I quit this one also.
8. Vegetable gardening. This one is on hold. Maybe permanently. I would like to do a small one, but my wife doesn't want a vegetable garden on the property. Too unsightly. When I put in a shed, I'll probably squeeze in a few Tomato plants on the side or something.
9. Music/Movies: I used to collect a lot of this, but had to cut waaaaaay back.
10. Cigars: I smoke a couple a week during good weather and have a modest humidor.
11. Home Brewing and beer tasting: I haven't brewed in a while now, but plan on doing it again. As time consuming as this hobby is, I may not be able to do it much for a while. Another hobby the wife doesn't particularly like.
12. Fishing/Hunting: I fish occasionally, but for the most part, I've quit for a long time now.
A word to all you unmarried guys out there. Get all your hobbies and toy buying out of the way before tying the knot. It's not that a marriage, a home, and children are no fun to take care of. It's just that it leaves very little time for anything else.

Wow this thread is coooolies!
In my spare time at the moment I do a few things here and there.
1. Constantly on the computer!
2. Music is a must have on this list
3. Building my car up. I am definatly a one-of-them car enthusiast. I am currently building a Nissan Silvia S13 (240SX for you americans :D)
4. Heres a biggy. Remote Controlled cars (more cars :p). I have an Alex Racing Design Stinger. It is battery powered not gas or nitro. It is pretty quick and id say ive spent over a grand on it. Brand new the chassis (being made entirely out of carbon fibre and aluminium) will cost $800 NZD. It is set up at the moment for drift racing and has (of course) and S13 shell:P
5. Golfing
6. Playing rugby
7. Indoor netball
8. looking after my nephew
9. Going for a ride on my cousins motorbike
Loads more!
...speaking of guys giving up hobbies...
I don't think men should have to give up ALL their hobbies when they marry...
...but the ones that take them from and keep them from home need to go...or be modified...
...golf comes to mind...
But gardening? A veggie garden can be attractive! I don't want one either (work wise for me)...so hubby has his mini-plot...he can plant whatever in it...so it's mostly potatoes...and we eat fresh baby potatoes for a good part of the season...
I'm also rather surprised, and appalled, at the number of men who've 'had' to give up their fish tanks! Good grief! It keeps them in the house! What are the women thinking! They can do tanks AND keep an eye out on the kids! I wish hubby was into tanks!
Pretty funny, Rue. I can see that as a woman's point of view. But I can also see that from another point of view. If I didn't have hobbies that kept me out of the house for at least part of the time I would have long since been killed or seriously injured by my wife. I drive her crazy with my high energy level. I think she likes it when I leave for a while.

My wife hates spending a bunch of money frivolously. Most hobbies are frivolous and require a significant amount of money. Especially ones like Ham radio. Check out the prices on radio equipment sometime.

I don't have much time or energy left for other hobbies to be honest. My job is very demanding physically and mentally, then it's home to do my 'second' job which is doing everything in the household. My hubby is disabled and can't help much. My Dad is aging and I have to help him with his home too. Our dog is getting older and has bad allergies so there's baths for him 2x week, and the canary to look after.
So about the only extra thing I do after the fish is spend a little time on the internet, and I have a couple of shows on TV that I like; LOST, Heroes, and Sheer Genius. On occasion I watch movies. I like fantasy, action, sci-fi best but my all time fav is the LOTR trilogy....
...that's too bad Barb...that you don't have a bit more time to yourself...

SCORE, i got paid for only 2 and a half hours of work. For some reason, i was a hour early. 60$ for doing nothing in 2.5 hours is pretty good.

Naw, it's okay. Sometimes I just need a gripe fest and then I'm over it for awhile. In fact I was thinking the other day that it seems like stuff never ends. There's always more to do but then it occured to me that if it ever DOES end, it probably means I'm dead!! LOL!!:ezpi_wink1:
