Never gave too much thought to snail smarts before...

...but has anyone else noticed that snails float until they're over where they want to be...then they sink to the bottom of the tank...pretty much landing right on target...

...then all the other snails follow suit?

I just thought they were being lazy and didnt feel like staying on the bottom. BTW, how do they float/sink? Do they take air in their shell or something and then let it out?

i think they lose surface area when they shrivel up making them more buoyant

Judging by kimmer's post, I would say no, they are not smarter than we think :)

...so...like...I have 6 snails...

...came home...took the pics of the snails and Mr. Plakat...

...did a head count...and ONLY 5 SNAILS!!!...

...so I looked behind the tank to see if she had crawled out...and I found this!

http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q152/Rue_album/SnailEggs.jpg

...then I looked for her...and found her on the floor...all withdrawn into the shell...the operculum was pulled away from the edges, so I could see in...the antennae looked withered...I figured she was dead...

However, since I'm not a Snailologist...I put her in some water to see if I was wrong...

...30 min. passed...an hour...then two...knowing they need air I was certain that she was dead and was about to toss her out...

...but had to do some stuff first...then I hear a call:

"Mom! I don't think the snail's dead!"

Lo and behold! She has returned to the land of the living. I don't think she's quite right...concussion I believe...and a crack in the shell...but she's definately alive!

She's a blue mystery snail...

She's still in a small cup...but waving her antennae...

That's what I was thinking, but thought maybe it was a black one. We have 2 blue ones, too.

oh yes, i think they are...Esmerelda plays soccer with veggies, she's pushes them where she wants them and then will eat them. She does the float thing to where she wants to land too.
