will this start cycling over? I have a 40g tall with the topfin hang on back and I want to add a aquaclear 30

Are you planning to run both filters? If so than no, it will not restart the cycle. If you only want the new filter than leave both run together for a month or so to let the new filter start a colony of bacteria. Or you could switch the old media into the new filter if you are planning to get rid of the old filter.

I figure I might as well run both.

I agree with annageckos. Running both filters for a month won't start the cycle over and since you plan on running both filters you will actually have more beneficial bacteria.

If you just add the second filter you will have no cycle interruptions. Once it is seeded in a month or so you will have redundancy, which is always nice.

I suppose I could get rid of the topfin filter once the aquaclear is cycled. I really dont think its doing the job, which is why I got the second filter. I had one of my other aquaclears from my 30 gal on the tank I'm talking about now (my 40g tall) and I noticed a significant difference in water clairity.

I would do what ever works best. I would keep the Topfin for a back up filter though. Better safe than sorry.

I would keep both as long as the topfin is doing something. I run 2 aqueon 55's on my 45 tall and couldn't be happier.

run em both as long as the original filter has water going thru it its working, may not be doing great but its still filtering
